I ran a load of dishes today, emptied the dishwasher, and I'm filling it up again. I did hand washing, too. But also made dinner, cooked chestnuts and cut up the big ham shank I bought today. Tried to put most of what I used into the dishwasher, but several big things are still out to be washed.
Edible ham is cut up in containers in the fridge, and the skin, bone, and fat is simmering on the stove. I plan to make a split pea soup with it.

I washed a load of dishes this morning, cleared off the breakfast table, and wiped down some kitchen cabinet tops and stove top. Not finished, but getting better.

Hi larataylor, I love home made split pea soup - yum. Well done dayeanu, for making a good start. I finally caught up with my dish backlog this morning, after 3 or 4 rounds of handwashing yesterday & running the DW overnight.

I can't seem to find the drive to get the kitchen to perfect these days. But I keep loading up the dishwasher, and washing "big stuff" as I need it. Since I have to cook every night, and I don't have a lot of pots and pans, I have to wash one to cook the next thing.
Tonight we had ham and colcannon. I strained out the ham stock, so I have that big pot to wash. I looked up recipes for the chestnuts I cooked yesterday … but they all require ingredients I don't have, and I think those chestnuts will be gone tonight!

wtg going step by step everyone
washed up here last night. I'm often turning computer off first, so I don't get drawn to look at things/stuck in sticky web after posting I've washed up.

Thank you all for the welcome home!
This evening I was going to skip posting to this thread because the dishes weren't washed and I wasn't going to do them. Intentionally. I'm back to sharing a bed with someone who snores loudly at times so I haven't been sleeping well / the weather has been dismally grey and so has my mood (my batteries run on sunshine) / I'm feeling overwhelmed, etc., etc., etc. So my "all or nothing" thinking kicked in and said "if you can't do everything then why do anything?" And then my "dish-washer-upper-support-group" thinking said "why not do everything but the dishes?" Gather all the dirty dishes in one place. Dump the trash. Put the recyclables in the garage. Dump the plastics. And that's what I did.
And I am so proud of myself. Because, for me, changing "all or nothing" thinking is as important as the actual act of doing the dishes. So the 4 bowls, 2 knives and 1 travel coffee mug are waiting for me IN THE SINK. In the morning.
GRyPiT - DONE
Ladies, you continue to inspire me and make me think. Thank you.

gracious, I really like your phrase 'my batteries run on sunshine'. Mine do too!
I finally got my dishes washed this morning, the stove and counter wiped down and the grotty cutlery divider scrubbed. It had been bothering me for days.

Hi gracious - yes, for me this support group is the 8th wonder of the world, cause it makes me challenge that 'all or nothing' thinking and keep moving towards my goals.
Now I don't give myself a hard time if I don't finish all the washing up each day. However I always load the dishwasher and cat proof the kitchen each night.
Today I remembered how I do better by getting the difficult stuff done first, rather than leave it until the end. If I leave the pots and pans until the end, then I run out of room in the drainer, so I leave them until the next time, and then sometimes they just don't get done....
so today I started with the pots and pans, dried and put them away, then finished off ALL the dishes. I am so pleased with myself.

I am pleased to report that all dishes have been done
I tried yesterday's trick - do the pots and pans first, wipe and put away, then do everything else. This has worked so well for me, when I remember to do the dishes in this order. I have also run and emptied the dishwasher & swept kitchen floor.
Next - remember to wash the range hood filter in the dishwasher - I am going to get DH's help with this.
gracious - thank you for my little cheer squad - they help me keep going when I get that 'why bother' feeling & bring a smile to my face.
