I am joining the sleep challenge. Typically I fall asleep watching TV for about an hour or so and then wake up and can't get back to sleep for a while. Then, I sleep for four hours or so and have to get up and go to work. I know I need more sleep, so I am going to try to get a bedtime routine going. I am shooting for six and a half to seven hours of sleep. This means I will need to be in bed by 10:30 or 11:00 at night.
I know It will help with my weight loss, health, mood, energy level, etc. I just wish it wasn't so hard!

larataylor Yay for getting up at 6 yesterday onwardandupward Welcome to the challenge! I'm sure you know this already; but one of the most common reasons for over-eating and excessive snacking is feeling tired... So I also think that if you get a better sleeping habit, then it could boost your weight loss too! TRACKING MY IMPROVEMENT FOR WHEN I GET UP IN THE MORNING:- Thursday, October 9th: 09.15 am - Friday, October 10th: 08.55 am (20 minutes improvement ) - Saturday, October 11th: 08.37 am (18 minutes improvement ) - Sunday, October 12th: 08.30 am (8 minutes improvement ) - Monday, October 13th: 09.03 am (33 minutes of deterioration ) - Tuesday, October 14th: 09.25 am (22 minutes of deterioration ) - Wednesday, October 15th: 09.10 am (I'm now back at where I started...grrr...but it's still 15 minutes improvement from yesterday so I still get a goldstar ) I will NOT excuse why I've been stepping backwards with my sleep rhythm the last days, but I do have an "explanation"; I got my period yesterday and that time of the month gives me terrible period pains, and extreme fatigue for 3 days before and after my period starts, so that's the explanation for why I've needed more sleep, but it's still not a valid excuse; most women in the world have period pains and still get up and do their daily job. I need to "straighten up" now! My goal is to start waking up around 8 am next week... Next week I NEED to wake up early too, because I have a new client I'll work for next week in addition to my normal work... On a positive note; I went to bed at 11.03 pm yesterday, and I can't remember going to bed so early in a few months... I fell asleep around 11.45 pm and I woke up without an alarm clock (my phone battery went flat during the night) at 09.10 today, and I got up immediately, so "yay" for that.

I slept in my chair from ten until one. Then I watched TV for an hour, then went to bed, setting the clock for five thirty. I did not wake up until seven. So I guess I got three hours plus five hours sleep with an hour in between. But I am running late this morning because of the oversleeping. One step forward, one step back. Onward

I'm feeling discouraged. Napping during the day because I really, really needed it … oversleeping because my alarm didn't go off … allowing other people to keep me up late … giving in to lights and computers, etc. because I was awake anyway … I feel like I've lost all the progress I made.
It seems like changing my sleep habits requires 100% commitment every single day and night, even to the detriment of other things. My *hope* is that it's possible get to a place where 100% commitment is not required, and a little flexibility is possible and does not result in a complete backslide.
But how long do I need the 100% commitment … which requires me to slog through unproductive days and leave things undone and unsettled to go to bed? It's really hard. My life doesn't work well on my "bad" schedule, but it also doesn't work well when I'm struggling to change. It will only work well when the "good" schedule is my default setting.

larataylor. Please don't feel discouraged. I also lost all my progress, but now I've had two nights of improvement... The main thing is not to lose your motivation? Since you are allowing other people to keep you up late, it sounds like you have lost your motivation a bit? Could you buy a new alarm clock? Perhaps that type of alarm clock which vibrates under your pillow (they are quite cheap), that way you can sleep with ear-plugs on at night (to block out noises from family, and sounds outside your home) but still wake up from your alarm when your pillow starts to vibrate... Sounds like you need some "life-hacks"... My life-hack: I drink 1 can of Red Bull Zero (no sugar) the moment I wake up, so that way I start moving as quickly as possible after getting up. And in the evening I take a calming non-caffeinated tea with chamomile (or you can allow yourself a herbal over-the-counter sleeping pill in the start of this project as long as you are ready to quit it when your body has adapted the the new sleep rhythm)... TRACKING MY IMPROVEMENT FOR WHEN I GET UP IN THE MORNING:- Thursday, October 9th: 09.15 am - Friday, October 10th: 08.55 am (20 minutes improvement ) - Saturday, October 11th: 08.37 am (18 minutes improvement ) - Sunday, October 12th: 08.30 am (8 minutes improvement ) - Monday, October 13th: 09.03 am (33 minutes of deterioration ) - Tuesday, October 14th: 09.25 am (22 minutes of deterioration ) - Wednesday, October 15th: 09.10 am (I'm now back at where I started...grrr...but it's still 15 minutes improvement from yesterday so I still get a goldstar ) - Thursday, October 16th: 08.55 am (15 minutes improvement )

Lara, IMO just wanting to change counts. You know I've been getting up at 5:30, but I haven't told you what time I've gone to bed: after work Fri it was 4:30am, 4 hours sleep; Sat bed at 2:30am, 5 hours sleep; Sun bed at 3:30am, 2 hours sleep - and a 3 hour nap after the walk. Well, I almost killed myself with that schedule! Last night and the night before, I was in bed at 10pm. I had to, because my knees were so swollen. My body falls apart without sleep, it's ridiculous! So it's taken me almost 3 weeks to get into a routine, and the roller coaster sleep pattern to get there goes with it. My body fighting the early rising? Probably, !

I need to join this. Sleep issues are messing me up. On a typical day I fall asleep watching TV sometime between 10PM and 11PM, then wake up at about 1AM and then watch TV/doze until I have to get up at 6AM. And I don't nap during the day. I'm not getting any good sleep, which leaves me foggy most of the time.

I woke up and got up at 6:00. But shortly after, I felt quite ill and went back to bed. I'm not sure what that was. I don't think I've lost *all* my progress, and I will continue to work on it.

Last night I fell asleep on the couch at 8:30 or 9, crawled into bed at 10, and then still didn't get up until 7:30 this morning. Maybe I was catching up. I figured out maybe why I was waking up at night. I started a new antidepressant, and I was taking it at night in case it made me sleepy as some do. well obviously it is having the opposite effect so I started taking it in the morning instead. I haven't been waking up at night but still sleeping late. I also haven't felt real well the last few days. It might be effects of the flu shot. Which I don't mind as it is nothing compared to real flu.
I am frustrated as my plan is to get up and write for an hour before I go to work, and also practice my guitar a little. Can't do that too early (live in an apartment, don't want to disturb the neighbors) but if I get up on time I can squeeze in a few minutes before I have to leave. Lately I have been getting up barely in time to get ready for work. Then in the evening either I am too tired to do anything, or I am so frustrated by what I didn't get to do in the morning that I stay up way too late and keep the cycle going.
Red Bull Zero, eh? I may try that. There's too much time between when I wake up and when I get up. Maybe I'll put a can in an insulated bag with blue ice and keep it by my bed.

I'm still doing better than before, but not great. It's a bit easier to get to sleep and to wake up in the morning.
Last night, two kids stayed overnight. The boy slept in the bed in the addition that I had made up really warm. He said he loves to sleep in the cold under warm blankets … so that was fine. It's cold at night now, but not too cold. The girl slept upstairs on the couch in the teen den, and got cold. But she could have come into the warm house if she wanted to!
They cooked breakfast, and had breakfast at the dining room table after I cleared off the clutter I'm still working on that's been sitting there! It's now on the floor … weeded out and consolidated, but still there … I think I'll put the rest in the garage.
I just went out to pick up DD from a little job she was doing. I absolutely LOVE that my keys are always in my purse, and my purse is always hanging on the coat tree along with my jacket … and I'm learning to put them right back there when I come in. Leaving the house is so easy without the stress and searching for these things!
It's such a blessing to make one little piece of life work well … and then have it bless me every day, and give me more time to make other parts work well, too.
We laughed as we pulled into the driveway. I'd left the garage door open after we got out tools for her to take to the job with her. The garage is the "face" of my house from the street, which is weird. And it looks something from a Hoarder show. I throw empty boxes and bags of trash to the front so when I open the door, they're right there to get into the trash bins. So the whole front view is trash, and then the murky depths suggest that the trash goes all the way back. There's not even a goat trail right now until I pull that trash out from the front.
Maybe I should work on that today. Get myself outside in the sun before the weather gets even colder. That's got to be some bad Feng Shui having my house look like that from the street!
Funny how some hoarders have homes that look really good on the outside … mine is much better inside.
