You've admitted to hoarding so take advantage of the dumpster...dump until it hurts...you will feel better for it but don't let them bully you. You toss everything so you gain control but toss toss and toss some more!!!Good luck!!!

I think keeping the really nice wooden toys is a great compromise. Check the wool sweaters carefully, you don't want "the special item" that you do save to be moth eaten. I cried over the condition of a few very meaningful items that I didn't know how to store correctly.

Jannie,
I am so happy to hear that you are embracing the process. It sounds like your kids are truly trying to do a loving and practical thing, and it would be a real shame for it to cause a rift between you. It definitely sounds like you are on the right path. Best of all, you have a new grandchild on the way!

Oh Jannie...I've been without internet for a little while..so I just saw this. Of coarse, you are in charge, it's your place. What you say goes. So I hope you don't spend your blood sweat and tears (and time) on this stuff that they don't want and can't use. Your time is too valuable and if they don't want to take the time on it well, they can just move it out themselves.

Thanks all, I'll post again after the dumpster arrives. I think it's coming Friday or Saturday, and they'll be taking it away Monday. My daughters have arranged their work schedules so they can be around Saturday and Sunday. I am actually looking forward to this as an opportunity.
Okay, the dumpster got delivered Friday. I put lots of stuff out from the garage, then my 2 daughters worked for three hours on Saturday and finished up. They totally emptied my garage and one inside closet. Literally TONS of stuff went out. I was able to grab a few things of worth (at least to me). I'd say three or four things got buried and I wish I'd saved them, but it's a small price to pay, as my son in law said. Yes we are too many people living in a too-small house.A couple of interesting things I found and saved: An afghan my late grandmother crocheted just before she passed away. Also three wine glasses. Strange. Who puts wine glasses in the garage? All I can figure is, we must have had a barbecue party, served wine and when I cleaned up after the party I stashed them there to was later. HAHA.

The truck came Tuesday and hauled away the dumpster. Nice to have an empty garage and a big empty closet inside my house.

So proud of you Jannnie! I could feel your emotions as you went through the entire process. from "It's MY house - how dare they tell me" all the way to the bittersweet feeling of pride and of having an empty garage and closet.
Now you can fill your house up with LOVE and family. Just as it should be!

Oh, this was bumped to page two so I didn't see it! Great job letting go! I know that it can't have been easy. Now you have all this space what are you gonna do with it?
