As someone who works as a volunteer at a library, I want to *THANK* you folks for **NOT** donating the moldy, musty books!! Had you not disposed of them, someone at the library would have had to do the job. Books in good--even just "fair" or "decent" condition--are much appreciated, however. Arid As a librarian who has to go throw a lot of trash from donations regularly, I thank you too. immaculata and WhyNot, I did read the last book in Earth Children series and I really try to forget it, as it sort of spoiled the series for me. The first two parts were all right, but the end sounds like she did not know what she is doing. So if you have not read it yet, do not do it. I like the Passage of Plains best together with The Shelters of Stone, closely followed by Valley of Horses on the third place. The Mammoth hunters and The clan of the cave bear share the last place, sort of. I do not read those as often as the others but unlike the last book I still like them. So how many books do you own now, June?

I do not recommend Land of Painted Caves at all. It ruined the entire series for me.

Hehe ... I've avoided it for a few years now. I was really hoping that we'd see Durc again in the final book. That would have been nice. Let's see .. number of books .. under 30, that is for sure. Once I'm not feeling so ***, I'll go upstairs and count.

Nope, no Durc there. Avoid it and count yourself lucky.

congrats! Books are tough for me as I love to read. Back when I became a single mom I made a rule - no more book buying, library only, and I have pretty much stuck to that (was motivated by economic factors!) But this week I was doing a 15 minute clean up in my bedroom and I tried to purge some books there. I found two that I was willing to part with and I found lending library at my job -- one dept has a bunch of shelves outside of it and it is an informal lending/donation library. So I am going to set myself a goal to donate 10 books this month....

a little update just cuz I am proud : ) I did donate some books to the lending library! Ended up donating four. Not because I purged four . I was at a friend's and she was purging books and said want some and I just said yes and took four... why? So I purged two of them and two of mine but that works out to being in the same place! I did donate about ten children's books to a relative but my little sweetie did the work of picking out the books.

This sounds so cool, WhyNot! Very inspiring... I've thrown out books, too, and I'm still in the process. Fortunately, I've found a place to donate some of them to, but this is the minority. Some of my books actually are so bad (for example, esoterics stuff that I desperately bought in a deep crisis many years ago) that I wouldn't want to propagate their contents. Others suffer from my habit of writing my comments on the margins... But those that are OK go to that shop. There are actually very few books that I want to keep as paper versions. I'm a great fan of my e-book: I can keep all the contents, but there's nothing that I have to dust! I want to rid my apartment of stuff, and since I've been a book collector for many years, books are a great part of this "stuff". I'm grateful to most of them for the insights and ideas I got from them, but this is no reason for having to dust them for the rest of my life

Great work magda!
If you can keep up the one in, one out, your book total won't increase, but you'll still be able to get new books once in a while.

My mother used to have friends who would bring me bags of books to my mother's house. Romance novels and crap like that which I don't read. My mother wouldn't ever say no to them and she wouldn't let me throw them in her dumpster so I'd take them home and list them on my book swap site. Nobody else wanted them either so they sat there for a few years and eventually I had way too many books in my daughter's closet. I threw them all out. Putting things in that big garbage can in the driveway just seems to be so freeing. Maybe it's cause it smells bad and now I know I won't get it back. I don't know. But I've never been a keeper of stuff and I let those books pile up way too long. Harlequin. Sheesh.

Ah, WhyNot, we are both going through "The Great Book Purge"! I am an avid reader and amassed a pretty hefty collection of many different genres. But something has "clicked" - and I am letting them all go except 1. Yes - 1 book, plus the family bible! I have a Kindle thing on my computer and my son is going to show me what to do with it. (Computers are not my forte). My three large, heavy timber bookcases went out of the house today! So I salute you for having the courage to take on this task And I agree with everyone about -don't read the last Cave Bears book - it ruined the whole thing for me

Hello, I am new to the boards. Have a love/hate relationship with books. Love 'em - reading them, and keeping them close, so that I may refer to them or re-read or read selective passages from them. Hate 'em - because of the space they take up. Have whittled them down to one medium-sized,jam-packed book case.(Did this before I joined this site.) Have decided that my books are last on my list to de-clutter. Is that okay? angelpussI recently was given a Kindle. Took a while for me to get adjusted to using it. I love it; can bookmark pages, highlight sentences, and go back and read whenever and wherever I like. I have vision problems now; just want to let you know that you can adjust the fonts, and background lighting and more. I like the Kindle now; still I love to look at my fav books and know that I can just pick them up whenever I want. My collection is diverse as are my interests. Some I truly need for reference purposes. Some I need for inspiration. Some I need for levity. Some I need for intellectual stimulation. Some I need to escape into another the world. And some I need to see the world through the eyes and thoughts of others. I guess my question now is "Do I really NEED them?" Hmmmm.... Yep, my books are last on my list of "down-sizing". Until I am ready to let them go, that is......

Thank you, megsb, I did not know that there was so much you can do with a Kindle. My eyesight is not the best either, so a large font will be much easier.

Books Happen! I just sent 5 boxes of books, all in excellent condition to the local thrift store. I had read most of them. The rest, I just didn't feel like moving. I know that in the future, library sales will temp me. I will have EMPTY bookcases awaiting new interests and new friends.
