We often have people ask how/where to start their decluttering/stepping out of squalor journey & into maintenance. This is frequently answered with "Follow the 3-D's". Thanks go to phoenixcat for adding the final 2 that fit perfectly! The 5-D's:- Dishes
- Dinner
- Duds
- Discard
- Defend
DAILY!In other words, make sure your DISHES are done, your DINNER is taken care of, your DUDS (clothes are clean (laundry), DISCARD trash daily, & DEFEND the areas you have cleaned DAILY!

Interesting.
The original was the 3 D's (dinner dishes duds).
For me, having a non-functioning kitchen always made the "D's" method impossible to me. I could never make dinner, let alone clean up after it. So the whole premise made me feel hopeless. Or else that the premise was for flylady mild clutterers and not for deep squalorers like myself.
I like that you've added discard and defend. That makes it feel more real to me.
I have to say that for me, after all these years, if I can scrounge something to eat -- and eat it wherever/however, that's a victory. I still don't cook. Dinner has never been important to my functioning. A microwave dinner is about all I can ever manage. And there's no dishes to wash.
For me ... I would prioritize as:
Discard. Defend (which equals clean up after yourself) Nutrients/Water. Minimize projects that require big cleanups. Make arrangements to do laundry and hygiene -- so that you can participate in life outside the home. If need be, use the laundromat. If need be, shower at the gym. Contemplate one joyful thing each day. Slowly work on the backlog of old messes.

Really like that list. I cleaned my kitchen today and feel really happy. We got Chinese takeaway for dinner (Fri night treat) but I feel so much better and 'together' with a clean kitchen. I've been working really hard to clear the fridge and go through the cupboards. Now I just need a 'D' word that means get groceries - 'deliveries'?

Lion, you'll have to make your own helpful mnemonic ditty to remember those! 5-D's is easy!

Sidestep, this is a very good idea to post. I've been here almost 2 weeks and looked for someplace to " begin." I found it difficult to find my way around the different threads, and I was grateful for those (including you) who took time to note several threads they felt might be helpful in responses on my introduction note. I have spent way toooo much time reading posts here and there and making notes since finding the site, but I consider that time to be an investment in my future well being.
Just last evening I put together my very first "do this daily" list. Thank you to papermoon's blog where I got to see how she began her daily list and gradually evolved it from time to time. So like hers, my list contains several self-care items that I really want to do each day, but often I simply forget to do them, and some home care things like the sink and dishes, etc.
Because I am painting the outside of my house and really want/need to get it finished, I am only putting 15 minutes of decluttering and 15 minutes of doing paperwork on my daily list for right now. But even that is a huge leap forward for me, the result of reading things others shared on this site. I had thought I would need to wait till the painting is finished before I could even begin to declutter. I found the 8 minute thread to be a great inspiration.
Interestingly enough, I pretty much came up with the 5 D's myself from what I've read, so your starting this thread is a reassurance to me. So, thank you everyone, for helping me get started here!

Thanks Sidestep for the "call out" and for posting this. I just recently came to the realization that all my projects go a lot easier if I keep on top of the dailies/maintenance stuff. Otherwise - the stuff that I've already done gets all messed up again or the stuff that I need to do daily starts to back up and stresses me out. A sixth D - "delight" - enjoy something everyday - a sunset, a sunrise, a cuddle, a purr, a tail wag, a hug, a good book, a good movie, a bubble bath or a mani/pedi - but delight in the day. My 98 (almost 99) year old aunt always says, "I woke up so it's a good day." PC

sidestep Thanks for pointing this thread out. Yes, D for Dollars for keeping on top of paying bills would go nicely here. You are so right.
My Dailies include keeping up on Trash/Recycling, which I abbreviate T/R.
Dinner, Dished, Duds, Dollars, T/R, and something extra, which Discard and Defend fit nicely into.
Discard and Defend take gumption. Here goes....

Holy cow! I see that I posted here shortly after I joined SOOS in 2015!
Well, a good reminder—need to make up the list again and get back on track, after thinking about my current situation! 😊

I posted on this thread six years ago. What has changed is that I now have diagnosed physical conditions for which I am required to take daily medications. So I add that to my daily essentials.
