Even though I have a fairly small 2-BR apartment, the one end of the kitchen is wide enough for two tables. One table holds my computer, printer--and clutter.
The baseboard heater beneath my computer table decided to quit. I quickly straightened up the kitchen, had my son clean up the living room and let him run the vacuum, and got the maintenance guy over here (and he's also the new property manager).
Well, opportunity knocked. I had to move the table and I explained that I had to shut down my computer and get it off first because the tabletop isn't really secured to the frame. He was like, no problem, while I did that he'd get a new smoke alarm installed in the living room.
While he worked on the heater I just cleared all the trash and everything off the table. Now I'm typing away at a nice, clear table, with nothing entangled in all the cords. I'd been trying to prod myself to clear it earlier...this gave me the kick I needed.
(I usually assign my son living-room detail because he's the one making the mess. I get the kitchen because it's mostly me making the mess.)
The tabletop is the place where I "allow" some clutter...but I really don't want to look at used cotton swabs while I'm surfing the Internet or playing Sims, ya know?

Good on you! That could have been a stressful episode but you handled it very deftly.

Good for you! Your home is certainly at the manageable/maintenance level if you can quickly clear a spot like that! Congratulations! And I'm glad your son is willing to help and do his share.

The living room wasn't that bad, but he had some of his clutter around. I told him, "I'll get the dishes and you straighten that up, and I can have the maintenance guy in here." The messiest room right now is his room, coming upon a level 1. He needs to get his stuff back in the containers, basically. Seems that since we had contractors in here (they're rehabbing this complex) there's been stuff not working right--which was the case with the heater. You're just about *forced* to maintain in case something else goes wrong! Well, I have a new baseboard heater in the kitchen and a new smoke alarm in the living room. The other kitchen table...well, where was I going to put the stuff that's not trash? Still it doesn't look bad, basically stacks of paper, and a notebook in which I write down my budget each month. I think living here has been good for me. It keeps me on my toes.

I have, in the past, found myself acquiring tables because the tables I had were full. ! Then, like an epiphany, I realized I don't need more tables, just less stuff!!! Now I keep my kitchen table more or less empty except for meals. It is a whole new way of thinking.

Right now the dining room table is stressing me out. It is covered with stuff . It will be cleared tonight, because a lot of it goes to "other people", but ever since I conquered PILE, if it's cluttered, it makes me crazy-- that is an area that I DEFEND!

After I read this I took a look around my kitchen and got together all my "other peoples stuff" and returned it all. Except for my neighbors big glass bowl because I am appropriating it for dinner today. Then it goes back. (I hope she don't need it )

Table is reclaimed -- unless a slightly dirty tablecloth counts.(Two meals have been eaten on it)

I struggle with keeping my kitchen table clean and cleared off. It's my favorite drop off spot, my desk, my sorting table, etc. etc. I've found that if I keep nice placemats or a pretty table cloth on it that I do better with the clutter. Right now it's clean and pretty, by tonight who knows.

The dining room table has been reclaimed in my house! There are lots of horizontal spaces left. Maybe my side of the wrap-around desk my hubby and I share should come next.
I'm just hoping the cleared off table doesn't inspire my hubby to dump stuff on it. Time will tell.

Well, our apartments are going to be inspected this week, basically they're looking to see what else needs done as far as the remodeling goes.
And my computer table is still pretty clear! I might have a cup or two here or there on occasion but that's easily taken care of.
It's also where I keep my budget notebook, to let me know what to pay on and when, as well as my checkbook.
