Hello,
I am a recovered OCD/hoarder, who has had spells of mild messiness. I am now able to throw out and give away. I "collected "things, especially books. I never had this take over my life, my house was presentable but disorganized. I now am into organization, it is a substitute but I can live with it in this form. I was treated with prozac some years ago for a more classic germ phobic form of OCD. I had never heard of squalor syndrome until today when my daughter sent me this link as part of her letter to me about turning around her hoarding behavior ( I have People magazines from the 80's & early 90's that she wouldn't let me throw away, stored up in my attic). In looking at the pictures I realized that my nephew and one of my best friends have level 2 squalor. How does one help a person recognize this and get help? Thanks

This forum was inspired by the original website www.squalorsurvivors.com . There is lots of info there. Here at this forum, we focus on changing our own lives. Current and former messies, hoarders, clutterers, and squalorers are all welcome here. You are welcome to post here about your own past or present issues, or about doing daily maintenance, or about finding your own method of doing relatively balanced housekeeping -- topics of that nature. Each of us is different, and has a different story to tell. Each of us has different approaches to "desqualorizing", dehoarding, decluttering, and cleaning. We all learn from one another. This forum is about changing/understanding one's own life, not about changing somebody else.In general, we try not to give advice about non-members. Hi Apubenj!! I think one of the best things you could do would be to direct them here! Unless they live with you it's going to be hard to give them advice without offending them... I have hoarding tendencies and so does my son. He is also a messy person...he simply doesn't see it. But he lives at home so instead of him coming here (which I have told him about) I can give him tips on things I've learned here and it has helped!
