Hi everyone, what can i say, i'm so glad I found this place....I kinda expalined all in the gereral thread, Im so glad I now have found people the same as me who are helping each other, its amazing to realise that you all understand! But i'm one person, where do i start? the bathrooms ok, the kitchen hasnt been used in six months, and I dont think the cats have seen the floor in that time either! I'm also sleeping on my sofe, cos the bedroom......well I cant even walk around in it. All the rooms have clutter, but the kitchen is full of trash bags and the lounge too.......what do I do? Ps to celebrate finding this board I put a bag out. But when i looked at the rest the fear came over me. I need to get it shipshape in a couple of days, I have someone coming to stay..............oh what will i do?? *rabbles incoherently* Thanks!

ohhhhh sugar I was going to say start in the bedroom and give yourself somewhere you can have a proper rest to keep yourself refreshed, then I saw your on a time limit.
If it were ME ( and I do the mad dash around every 6-12 months) Id get lots of black bags and start on the trash.
make sure you take plenty of breaks so you don't burn yourself out, I go for 45 mins clearing 15 min break. make a drink and come back to keep us updated is a good way to keep motivated. IM sure someone will be along soon to give more advice.

Welcome Hattie!! Well, aside from panicking, I think I'd start with the obvious trash too. Then start posting in Listzilla - it really does help to motivate yourself to do this!! And I wouldn't strive for "perfect" go for "good enough" instead. How good of a friend is this? I mean, like a judgemental friend or a really good friend who won't freak out if the place is a bit messy??

Welcome! Is there any way you can put the friend up in a hotel, and give yourself more time? These mad dashes don't really seem to help the squalor in the long run, I have done them myself many times, and they were never the end of my squalor. To really get rid of it, you need time to sort, throw away, maintain, etc. I worry that if you go through all of this in a few short days, and start stuffing things god knows where, you might burn yourself out and never really want to deal with it again, for a long, long, time.
Maybe you could explain there is a "plumbing issue" and you could stay at the hotel too, or something?
If you are going to do this mad dash, I recommend throwing out as much as you can, arranging for a charity to come PICK UP things (so much easier than dragging it out, and a lot of them do pick up) and really minimize everything you have. I had people come pick up at my house about four times before I had the squalor really under control.
I don't want to discourage you on your big clean though! If you really need your friend to stay at your house, and there is no way out of it, then go go go, you can do it, keep posting, keep reading, and you will make it!

Welcome, Hattie. I'm so glad that you found us. I'm with PaperTyger-just take one more bag of trash out of the kitchen, then post. We will cheer you on.
And w00t w00t for getting the one bag out!
