that was a really good test because you knew to tag my username (which is shorter than my "display name").

Personally, I think it also is a matter of personal choice. I do it as a courtesy to others. If someone asks a question, I tag them so they can go right to my response if they want.
As someone else mentioned, some people have changed their names on here. I'm one of them. Tagging @ _Linda_ won't send me a notification, it would have to be @ linnie because I started here as linnie.

_Linda_ i do the same thing too. I have my notifications set so if someone likes one of my posts i get a notification. Thats help because if person a liked my post on a working thread, chances are they posted on the working thread. Thats a prompt to me to check that thread and congraulate them. I find that looking at my post after i click the "post quick reply" button helps. If after ive posted the tag changes blue, i know that ive tagged someone correctly. Sometimes its a typo on my part, sometimes autocorrect does its own thing and changes what i typed, sometimes the person has a different avatar name from their log in name (like me, my avatar name is unswamping, my log in name is swampedbystuff). Maybe putting in the guidelines somewhere, where new people would be mostly likely to read could be the suggestion to pick a log in name that is "hopeful". I think when new members join, they are very overwhelmed and discouraged and choose a name that reflects that. Afterr being here and making changes, that log in name doesnt fit anymore. At least, thats how i felt. I didnt give any consideration to the fact that maybe one day, i might not be swamped by stuff and did i want to be know as that long after i cleaned up my house? So if i had to sign up today, i might choose "unswamped" because thats what i want to be. Or kittymama or something else that isnt negative. Thats just my opinion.

Since I am one of those whose visible name doesn't match their forum name, I recommend using the "reply" feature instead of the quick reply. There is a little icon of an @next to the outline of a person, click on that and a box will pop up, start typing the name of the person you want to tag and it will give you options to just choose the name you want to insert. It's also more fun to play with the reply this way because you have a lot more options; font size, font face, color, font manipulation; bold, italics, underscore, strike out, subscript and superscript as well as
text justification and various insertions notanotherdecade .
And of course Smilies!

Di i tend to use quick reply because im on an ipad (phones might be the same), i tend to have problems with the reply screen and only use it if im going to insert a photo or if by some very small chance i log in on the laptop. I can do smilies from the quick reply. Id love to do all those fancy fonts and colors etc. Its really good to know about doing that into the reply screen. I usually just type in tags on the reply screen. I will definetly try that next time.

And of course Smilies! I agree this is the best way to go, in my opinion. I find it easier than trying to figure out the original forum names. I might also add that it's the 5th button from the right for anyone that can't find it.
