Last week all my family got together and brought me a Kindle from Amazon for one of those big birthdays. It's an electronic book reader machine. I'm still torn between being thrilled or mad at them for outrageous extravagance.
Nevertheless, this is a very, very cool machine. AND, it keeps your books! Imagine 200+ books not on the shelves! 200+ books in your hand or backpack. It's just mind-boggling.
I can't get over that idea. After I read my book this week there's going to be no worries about keeping it, where to put it, does anybody else want to read it, will I hoard it because it's too good to lend? I almost couldn't breathe when I realized it.
The machine or my amazon account will keep the majority of my books for now. Think of it! Technology can turn out to be wonderful!!!

You know what though, I have a kindle and I bought it because I thought it was the coolest thing in the world and I only got one book on it never finished reading the book and now it is SOMEWHERE in my house or my mom's house and I have no idea where....now I am getting anxious wondering where exactly DID I put that 400 dollar device? i haven't seen it since my move in July. it's likely at my mom's house, I was staying there for a few days when the rat in my old house freaked me out too much (the reason why I finally moved out of that rathole, so to speak).
I think what got me was knowing that I could get books for so much cheaper than 9.99. Then it just felt like a sin. I should probably sell it sometime and make some of that money back... But I can see how it can be a wonderful tool to somebody who has a little more money, and doesn't want book squalor! That was why I bought it in the first place.

blackswan, there are thousands of free titles available for the kindle, and you can convert most ebooks for free. I have a friend on Twitter who will not shut up about their Kindle. If you want to sell yours though, now would be the perfect time. People will be buying for the holidays over the next few weeks.

Blackswan, if you can scrounge up the Kindle you can probably sell it with no problem on ebay or somewhere because Amazon is out of them until after Christmas.
The newer books can run high, but I got one for $0.99 and $3.49. And it's true that you can get them cheaper from other sites besides Amazon. I haven't figured all that out yet. There are some new books I just can't wait for so would order the hardcover, but even if the Kindle book costs the same as the hardcover, I still don't have to store the book! Huge, huge bonus. You might want to re-think that Kindle when you find it.
It is an amazing gift. I'm fortunate to have a good family and friends who spoil me terribly.
Anne.

My DH and I love to read and have a ton of books. We would love to get a Kindle someday. The only thing is we love actual books too - the feel, the smell, you know.
But someday, we will get one - to save space and trees. It's on our looong-term wish list.
In the meantime, we still have tons of paper books that we can read. (And we are getting rid of 95% of them after we're done reading them, which is yet another part of our declutter plan.)
Enjoy your Kindle!!!

The other thing that I don't really like about it, and I am sure they will fix it in the second generation, because nobody likes it, is that the page turning buttons are really awkward, and I was always pressing them. I heard about it when I was going to buy it, but I thought it would be no big deal. however, I was constantly doing it.
I will look into the free books though, that is a great idea! Another plus is that you can download by using the same waves as cell phones not the internet, so you can basically use it anywhere at any time to download a new book.

I have a Kindle! I love it!! We homeschool and use lots and lots of out of print books. I download them and we read them right off the kindle. A favorite feature is the built in dictionary. It's so easy not to look up words. I also like how the font size can be changed. It's easy to do large print for my dd to read, then change it back for me. I found this website manybooks.net/ that has lots of books already formatted for kindle.
