I've been messy for about 40 years. I've read the Messies' Manual, just about every other self-help book, and I've been on Flylady for several years. But to look at my house, you'd never know it. I have gotten a LOT of help with my thinking from Flylady, and love her, but somehow, I think my problem goes deeper than a lot of her devotees. I do try the 15 minute timer thing, occasionally. I am healthy and able-bodied, so what's wrong with me? I read the Squallor Survivor site, I am hovering between a 2 and a 3 on the National whateveritis scale, and a 4 and 5 on the photo scale. I guess it could be worse. I went to various counselors for 15 years, more or less, but could never bring myself to tell them the true extent of my mess, and so they never took that as a serious issue to be addressed. I tried and tried to tell them, but I just couldn't. I didn't want them to think badly of me. Image, and all that, you know. Anyway, after looking at the photos on SS, I'm convinced that people here are right where I am. That's a relief (I think). Now what do I do? (I've never had moral support, or a friend I could level with about my problem. I think I will find that here.

Welcome from a fellow messy! This place is a haven for me. I have actually learned more from here and SS than anywhere. The support and understanding is a huge help. Being able to be honest about who I am and how I live has been a major step forward for me. I have accomplished more in a few months by using the help here than in years of trying on my own. Listzilla is a big help. Especially Working in threes. 3 small things at a time and before you know it a big part is done.

Welcome Dayeanu!! I find that even just reading the posts in Listzilla will have an impact on me. I usually don't post there but if I read just one person's list or what they've accomplished it gives me the motivation I need to get up and do something! Being here has definitely changed my thinking too....I am a hoarder by nature but whatever mojo they have going on here has started to sink in and I find I am able to let go of things (although sometimes it's still real hard). Slowly but surely.... Glad you're here!!

Welcome, Dayeanu !
It seems that you have come to the right place at last! That's how I felt when I failed Flylady, SLOB Sisters, Organizer Lady, Julie Morgenstern, et.al. and finally landed at SS.
What to do next? Only you can answer that. Read, post if you want, do a list if you like, try anything you see suggested here that appeals to you. I like to go into the chat room and do challenges. Some post on Listzilla, some just read, then get up and do something. There is no right or wrong, just keep experimenting until you find what works for you.
Flylady's idea about the shiny sink can even be modified to clean up a place that inspires you. It doesn't have to be the sink. Some people report tremendous success with cleaning a small area, keeping it up, and expanding outward. That area can be your favorite cozy chair, or the area around the front door.
If moral support is what you are looking for, this is the place.
It's good to have you here.

Welcome dayeanu! Just jump in any ole place...
On listzilla, you can find some challenges - udderchaos is good about posting them. Of, the working in threes thread can be found in listzilla as well. Working in Threes is my lifesaver! Sometimes I post things like "take out three bags of garbage" and other days I need a bit more specific stuff so I post "threw away three fast food cups."
Welcome - you are among friends and you can't go or do wrong here!

Welcome, Dayeanu. I'm so glad that you found us! Keep reading, and keep posting. I'm certain that it will help!
P.S. Re what is wrong with me? Nothing. You are fine, just as you are. However, we can help you learn new skills to make life simpler.

Thank you, everyone for the welcome. It is so nice to know that people here actually KNOW what I'm like. On some of the other sites, I would read that these people would join, and a week later their homes would be spotless. These people clearly cannot relate to my mess. One thing that is so discouraging, I just moved into a new home 4 months ago, and already I'm at a 3 on the NSGCD scale. I was NOT going to let that happen again. I have to take drastic action now. I am not going to live with this, in this house. I'm so inspired by all the posts I've read here, and I'm going to Listzilla.
