Hi everyone! I found this site through squalor survivors and thought it would be great to meet some people who are going through similar issues. I'm 25 years old, married with a 5 year old son. I grew up with a total neat freak of a mom, outwardly at least...inside she was a hoarder. Our apartment was always neat as a pin, but the basement, attic, and garage was total clutter, junk for 30 years ago, folded up wrapping paper from 3 Christmas' ago...my homework from 1st grade...you name it. Somehow along the way, I became the absolute total opposite of her. My house is a disaster zone 95% of the time, but I have no attachments to anything, I'm completely happy to give away my sons old toys, old clothes, I keep Christmas/B-day cards for a week then junk them, I go on de-clutter binges and toss 3-4 garbage bags of stuff, sometimes really good stuff, that I just don't use, or want.
I am totally bi-polar when it comes to my home. Somedays I'm totally disgusted by the clutter and go on 6 hour cleaning surges, other days I just don't care and I'm content to sit on the computer and ignore the mess. I'm a pro at hiding the mess, I'm literally afraid of the closet in the spare bedroom, the laundry nook, and my pantry. The bookcases are an ugly mess, under the beds are scary, I moved into this house 6 months ago and there is still an unpacked box sitting under an end table in the living room. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats...all of whom have fleas! The shed like crazy, and the cats have decided to make my living room their litter box. They HAVE a litter box, but I think since they are both un-fixed males, then are marking territory or something. If anyone knows how to get cat pee out of carpet...that would be awesome.
The carpet is a completely separate issue, it's disgusting, completely horrid. I'm embarrassed to let anyone in because of it, and I don't even like to be in my own living room because of it. It was disgusting before we moved it, but it's only gotten worse. I want laminate flooring so badly...but we just cant afford it right now.
I need help getting motivated to just get up and fix this place but there is just SO many obstacles...so much stuff to undo...that I get discouraged quickly.
Help me?

:-*Hi Messy Momma! I am a messy momma , too (hehe)! If you read my intro (I feel like my life is over), you can see that I am in the discouragement stage too. My home is in disrepair, I am having trouble with pets, kids, money, and my weight, and everyday I say to myself..."Even if I cleaned that place, it would still have holes in the carpet/walls, two rooms with no electricity, etc...I mean...WHY bother?" I guess I am not in a stage to help you very much, but I wanted to tell you that you are NOT alone! There are also many good tips and ideas here, as well as very loving people who know EXACTLY how you feel. I have cats, too, and find that baking soda works pretty well to clean the urinated area. Bleach does NOT work, as you need a base to neutralize an acid. Bleach makes the kitties want to pee there some more. BIg Big hugs to you from another mommy. We will make it....!!!!

Welcome! This place has been such a lifesaver for me. As for the carpet I use the pet enzyme cleaner. I get mine from Walmart because it is cheaper than in the pet stores. I have heard that vinegar works too. I think fixing the cats may help some in the marking territory area. I have an unfixed dog because he is a stud. He makes me $$ so I really need him to stay that way for a few more years. . He has periods of marking stuff, too. Thank heavens for the enzyme stuff. It works miracles. The one I use is OUT! Stain and Odor remover.

Hello, and welcome! I'm also new here. I just wanted to say that I've found the best thing for fleas is Advantage, the liquid stuff you put between the pets' shoulders. You can get it from any pet store. It really works.

Welcome, Messymomma !
There are obstacles. Mine include a house with a foundation leak that cannot be repaired and is making desqualoring harder. Discouragement is a cyclical companion (comes, goes, comes back) .
If it is at all possible, fix the male cats (unless they are studs). Look for low cost spay/neuter clinics, call animal rescue groups in your area, ask vets for a payment plan, but try to get that done. It will usually help tremendously.
The best help getting motivated is the one you have seem to have discovered on your own, that motivation follows action. You started in, got a lot done and now have plans for the future. Sometimes all it takes to find the motivation is to just force yourself to do one thing, and it becomes a snowball.
It's good to have you here.

I ripped out the nasty carpet in our bathroom and replaced it with two boxes of $20 sticky tiles. Bought seperately. It is SO MUCH EASIER to keep clean!
