Firstly, my heart goes out to all the victims of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, India. It brings back memories of 9/11 and the Bali bombings. My prayers are with them.
This morning on the radio I heard one of the most inspirational stories of courage to emerge from that carnage. (I am sure it will be one of many.) If I can find a link I will post it later.
An Australian man and his girlfriend were in the hotel bar when the first grenade went off. as he was ex-military, he recognised it and got them both onto the floor. The day before he had been in there and he remembered a storage room door he had seen, up some stairs. He got up and rounded up as many people as he could, about thirty and get them into the room. While in there he heard the shooting in the restaurant below. He said the shooting went on for about 8 minutes.
He knew they would find the room, so he went out to find a knife to disable one of the gunman and get a weapon. Then he noticed that the stairwell was enclosed so he threw a table down and jammed the door. He went down to jam a stool into the door and he saw what they were doing through a glass window in the door He saw the terrorists (about 17 years old he said) shooting the bodies.
They spotted him and started shooting. Then as they left they threw a grenade, but it didn't go off.
He said he jammed a chair against the door as well and went up and waited for the police which took about 10 minutes.
When the interviewer said it was a brave thing to do, he said "Not really, someone had to do something, no-one was doing anything, so I had to do something."
What a man!
