Halfway---I am so sorry that you have this scary problem. Sounds like you really did do a lot of work to hopefully make it safe. Will you have the foundation man come back & check it for his opinion on stability ? Not yours, the posts & piers. I hope the cement & wedging in the tiles & granite {?} & shoving in the cement works for you. I know it is hard to worry about house stuff & not get your sleep. Please let us know how it all turns out ! catcat

Wow, that is a scary problem for sure!
Sounds like you've done the best you can for now.
Take care of yourself of course, first and foremost. I know you want to take care of what you can...
I too have thought of stripping this property of useable materials but it is too big a project for me. I can hope that the next owner will responsibly deconstruct things if tear-down is the choice.

... PRAYING the whole corner doesn't shift and break the picture window glass as I am sitting on my little stool with my head half under the floor and shoving the wet mix in. Think about if the room does shift off the support I will look like the wicked witch of the west with my legs only showing and tools and rags scattered around. H2H, I know how independent you are but I can't stop myself from telling you that no home is worth getting killed for. PLEASE do not risk your life or chance of severe injury on this stuff. I understand what you have written about the possibility of the whole house collapsing but to my mind this is not enough to balance the scale. Your life and the life of your home do not have equal value in my eyes.
Please take care.

Yes; we had a member here who used to post about doing all sorts of repair work on her crumbling home and that of others.
She posted *EVERY* day. She suddenly quit posting. We've never heard from her again.
It is my personal belief that she didn't survive doing one of her home repairs.
I miss her very, very much . . .

H2H...you've been actively working on your home and property and mentally noting (and writing down) the things that need to be done. Can you help me understand just what the plan is?
Thus far I understand that:
- you need to have surgery in a time to come and will need either a new place to live afterward or have your own place in shape - you are giving yourself X amount of time to come to terms with this either/or - you are trying to decide whether to sell or keep your home - if you decide to sell, you further need to decide if it will be on an as-is basis, or get things fixed up to code - if you decide to stay it will be on an as-is basis, or getting things fixed up to code - the situation includes a hoarding issue (well, a halfways one, ) as well as an earthquake issue - the situation requires spending either lots of money or less money - you are working toward reducing the hoard in the event the home and property are sold, either as-is or fixed up, or in the event that you do decide to stay after your surgery - there are areas of your home that are unsafe and you are deciding whether to fix them in the event of a sale, either as-is or fixed up, or for yourself should you stay - there are areas of your home that are safe but cluttered and you are thinking of living in only those areas while you either think about selling the house fixed up, or as-is, or work toward getting it fixed so you can stay - there are numerous costly fix-it projects that must be done in order to sell it as fixed, or to stay in it. - there are numerous costly fix-it projects that must be done in order to sell it as-is, or to stay in it as-is.
, the more I list the less I understand. Can you clarify all this in a kind of a nutshell for me?
A thought is emerging from the chaos of my understanding this situation. Could you not just lop off all the parts of the house that are unsafe, don't worry about replacing them, have a smaller, but safe house to either sell as-is or fixed up, or live in as-is or fixed up?

H2H I can't quite remember if it was you who once posted a story about a woman in your area who makes mosaics, etc. inside her home. Might she be interested in taking some of your tiles? I remember I looked her up and she does appear to use quite a lot of them. (Sorry if I already asked this in the past -- can't find the original post.)

Thank you H2H for that explanation. I hope I didn't seem snoopy, just was confused about the situation, and confused, cannot offer any good advice. Possibly can't do that even when clear-headed about it, !
Getting things gone is a good plan no matter, and cleared out rooms certainly do lend themselves to multiple uses.
I personally would find it very difficult to live in a state with such regulations as California has on dwelling places, especially if I didn't believe such regulations were of any benefit. I'd move too. In a complete aside, talking to a young couple who moved a few miles from me and dropped by to see if I would lend them a male goat, I learned that in their part of Ontario you can't have a meat pig within 8 feet of your home. I don't mean the barn or outbuilding, I mean the actual pig. Makes me wonder what kind of trouble having a cow right at the front door could bring me, never mind chickens and goats that actually come in (usually uninvited, ).
So the idea is to enjoy yourself for the next two years, put some transitional repairs and safety measures in so you stay safe during that time, continue working on the stuff, have your surgery, recover and move.
Sounds like a plan!
