Whew after all the laundering yesterday I was going to put away the more 'fall' colors of my wide doorway opening covers. But our weather switches to cold and rainy fast, so the new sheers I put up don't do a thing..just keep billowing out from the gust from the cat door 2 rooms away!.
My old cottage had the standard door widened from the LR to the Kitchen years ago, and is now 8ft which feels VERY open, sure, BUT poor house insulation means all the dang heat in the LR is gone fast in the 10 deg. cooler kitchen!
With animals a hard closing doorway or folding/sliding doors won't work.
I tried 2 twin bed comforters in a pleasant color-matching print.... too thick and long, but they DID insulate. I got tired of sewing up the bottoms of heavy curtains to fit there, and one day I measured the stunning rustic fall theme table cloths I saw in the store and they fit perfectly.
These cotton woven ones with color and texture just clip-hang, I can wash them easily, and I got the idea to buy FOUR..two in one pattern, two in a darker pattern matching tones. ( Yeah Target store..good selection, cheap)
So in winter I hang both together, a double draft blocker, with the darker facing the LR, and in warm weather I hang JUST the lighter one, and it offers enough draft stop, and allows some light to filter thru.
In Russian homes there is always a drapery at the doors, and in Victorian homes they had big velvet drapes and swags... so this really works and saves heating whole rooms I am not in!
I joke I can ONLY sell my house in the summer..if buyers walk thru to an icy drop in temp during winter? The difference was $100+ a month on gas heat bill with no draperies!!!!

My mind has been playing some idea all winter to figure what to do about a leaky air front door in the LR. I get cold easily & there are drafts coming in around the door. I already had weather stripping installed twice. It didn't help. I have pictured something I could hang up on clips , especially in the evening. You may just have saved me for next winter. Thanks !

catcat In the old farm house I rented here in Humboldt leaked cold air all around the door, my answer was to install a thingy like those old fashion 50's tea towel drying rods, they swing out from the wall, the 3 long rods holds towel, dishrag.
so you need 2 C clamps basically- cost pennies
"Electrical metal conduit clamp" 2 of them..one above the other on wall behind the door. about 4-6" apart. or INTO THE DOOR FRAME if it is wide enough
and a metal rod or PVC pipe - a bit wider than the door, bent down at one end ( an L shape) ..this bent part went into the 2 C clamps..needs to be screwed to the stud, not just into plain drywall
slide a heavy drape onto it, it can swing back against the wall behind the door, when not needed, or swing forward to cover 4" all around the door to block draft.
it works!!!

Halfway---Great idea ! I may very well try this next winter. I think my home's insulation is not as good as it once was. also, I am older & thinner than I was. Have lived here over 28 years & it feels different. Thank you so much .
