I am working on getting the house really clean before I start bringing out the Christmas decorations. Our music room [has DH stereo, CD player, LPs and CDs all stored in there] has been a problem for at least 6 months. Problem is we got new TV last year and old bulky TV ended up in corner in there. The old TV was the first thing I wanted to get moved. Then we got good deal on 2 desks, one went to younger DD room but older DD did not want to replace her current desk, so second one - you guessed it - ended up in music room also! Plus DH bicycle stuff, and 2 milk crates with stuff in them...
Anyway, the one thing driving me nuts was the TV in the floor there. When DH and I got home from visiting my mom late this afternoon, I asked him to help me and we spent about 90 min on the room and I am happy! The TV is currently on the screen porch with a tablecloth over it, we will decide what to do with it after Christmas. It is hidden, all I care about. The desk is in my hallway and looks ok for now, I am going to donate it somewhere before Christmas. The milk crates are gone, I found room on bookcases in the room for the LPs that were in there. Some stuff thrown out. DH consolidated his bike stuff that was scattered in the room, and found room in bottom of cabinet in there for it.
Floor is vacuumed and mopped. DH said "the room looks bigger!" REALLY?!?! That is what happens when you move stuff out of a room it doesn't belong in! Get creative with storage. The top of the antique cabinet in that room has glass doors, and decorative stuff I like in in there. The bottom has 2 shelves, wooden doors, and DH's bike stuff, cleaning rags, coaxial cables, all kinds of stuff hidden away. He can find it if he needs it, and I don't have to look at it! I will post picture if younger DD can show me how! Joy in Virginia

Yay for the clean room! And kudos on repurposing the tv into a little temporary table. The room looks bigger. That is what my kids said when the kitchen was cleaned. Amazing isn't it. Ejoy your music room!
I am so frustrated with my living room. I really want it to be functional again. I have made headway, but there is still much to be done. I keep doing the little bit at a time. The challenge is to get them to cooperate and keep it that way.

Joy chose these words as the SUBJECT for this thread:
Pick ONE thing that you want to fixI had one of my squalor home-disintegration dreams last night. I sometimes have these dreams, where I FEEL that everything in my house is broken. Last night the focus of the dream was drapes that had collapsed. I was desperately trying to find the drape guy (in the dream). Mr. KL (a real person, now deceased). WELL! Once upon a time, I sat down for my morning meditation, and started to cry. The thought that had welled up in me was: "Everthing in this house is broken". This was about 7 years ago. LOTS of stuff was ruined; some was fix-able; some logically needed to be replaced. The drapes had just come down in the dining room, and DH had not been able to fix them yet. The hutch in the bedroom FELL on me when I was trying to pile more stuff on top. The roof in the garage had to be replaced prontissimo, as we had old VALUABLE collector cars inside. The roof in the house was still leaking badly; plaster all gone in various corners. This morning, my blender was leaking. The rubber ring was not placed properly. It is 'only' 4 years old. My old blender was 25+ years old when I tossed it: I had bought it second hand for $20. I am getting used to the idea that household items do NOT last forever (except maybe solid hallmarked sterling silver). My new stereo system is a wonder. I think for the first time in many years that I will listen to all of my Xmas cd's this holiday season. My brother was APPALLED when we were trying to hook up the non-compatible CD player. The old system's wiring was shot; the woofer was shot; the stand was warped and broken;25 years of heavy use...... "I think you are entitled to get a new system every 25 years" he snapped. I am now going to FINISH my thank-you Xmas card to Mr. Hunk: he gave me a gift certificate for a bookstore for my birthday. I have been procrastinating, as I am shy......Mr. Hunk ("Richard")has really helped us to FIX things in this house. Not just cosmetic, though that is important too. His Big project for OUR spring: front steps that are dangerous, cracked, chipped, warped. He has done a temporary fix, but we HAVE to redo them. I am all in favour of this! thank you for this thread.

"Pick one thing that you want to fix".........
I pick me!
And the one thing about myself I would really like to fix is my inability to make decisions about things. Sometimes I'm very good and can make decisions but sometimes I just freeze up and I hate being like that. Or I change my mind....I'm very wishy washy... This one thing, more than any other trait I have, is what holds me down.

The mountain of laundry. It's towering in my closet, threatening to overflow and overtake the bedroom. We have to pass through our closet to get to our bathroom, and my hubby says he has to scale the mountain to pass through, and that if I don't hear back from him within a day to send search and rescue teams. I know that 2 loads a day will keep everything maintained, I just need to get caught up first. So that's my goal, to get my mountain of laundry conquered before the end of the year.

The library.
We have a library of several thousand books. Some of them are rare and valuable. Some I grew up with. Because of space considerations, we have some books scattered, but I'd like to be able to get all of the books that are worth keeping in the library, properly stored.
Right now we don't have enough shelves, and the kind you buy and put together yourself collapse under the weight of our more valuable volumes (entire collections). The built in book shelves are sturdy enough, but I need more of that type.
The library itself is stuffed with junk my parents gave me. It blocks the books, I have no place to put it. What little of it I would like to keep should go in the part of the house that floods, so I can't put it away. This keeps me unmotivated.
I want a nice library.

Mine would be my bedroom, so I have a bed to sleep on, instead of the couch. Although most of the time I prefer the couch. I swapped rooms with my son, when I let him and his finace move in here. Now everything that came out of that room is now in his much smaller room. I have too much stuff, way too many clothes. I have put this off long enough and I need to get started on it. Getting this done will make things easier for me. As of now I have clothes (all mine, did i mention i have too many clothes ) piled in the livingroom on the loveseat and recliner. I do not like that either. edited for spelling and leftout words

The only thing I needed to fix was the way I looked at my worth, and the worth of *things*.
And I am working on that.

There are MANY things that need to be done in my home. Most require a visit from the landlord. Due to my squalor, I have not called him on these problems and now there are several. I am going to slowly get them done, so as not to burden the landlord.
The first will be.....fixing the dripping shower faucet in the back bathroom. It is the only shower in the house. I cannot begin to guess how many gallons of water I have wasted. I thought about trying to fix it myself, but am afraid if I get the faucet off, I won't know how to get it back on. The bathroom is not cluttered with junk, but it is filthy. I guess I don't see it except to shower and I haven't kept it clean. We don't use the toilet in there as it leaks too and I keep it turned off at the wall....for emergency use only. BUT, the FIRST STEP is to clean the room. Then have him fix the drip. Then tell him about the toilet so he can plan that at his convenience.
I will post here when this is finished!
