I am not totally squalor-free, but since Jan 2008 I have had a housekeeper (Jollie) come every two weeks to vacuum and scrub. This also helped me to keep decluttering, as I wanted cupboard clear so she can wipe them, and floors clear so she can vacuum. The kitchen, living room, and main bathroom are squalor free.
Since Thanksgiving, I have really been pushing myself and the hubby and kids to keep the house "Jollie-licious". That is what ds9 calls the house after she comes to clean. We did a pretty good job.
The amazing thing is that today I wanted to finally get our Christmas tree up. In the past this has meant a major clean up in the living room, to make space for the tree. And searching to find the tree and ornaments, which means sorting through a lot of crap.
Today, I had dd13 vacuum the living room. The kids pulled the tree out of the (extremely messy) spare room. DH set the tree up, and brought out the one large container of Christmas ornaments. I grabbed the one medium sized box of Christmas knick-knacks. That is all we had to do to get ready to set up Christmas! It just struck me really strange, because it has never been so simple!
Oh, we had green and pink streamers in the living room from a party, so I took down the pink streamers, too.
My bedroom is still very messy, and I have a storage room of doom that has not been opened for many years. But in general, most of my home is squalor free. And it makes life much easier!
I am not bragging, just trying to offer some hope for others. I joined the old Squalor Survivors site in 2006 I think. This has been a long journey, and very slow in some ways. But it is just totally amazing what we can all do with a little help from our on-line friends. Do keep sorting and organizing. It really makes life so much sweeter, so very much sweeter!

That's wonderful!
I'm inspired by your success. I hope I can post something similar next Christmas. I know I can clean my squalor, I just don't known about keeping it up as well as you have, and that's the real goal.

Thanks! I invited two friends over to play with ds9 today after church. We got home, and I realized the kitchen table was a mess, so I cleaned it up. I also realized that the living room was strewn with papers and leftovers from decorating the tree, so I cleaned that up. Put out a few knick knacks on dusted shelves (thanks, Jollie). I still remember dusting that shelf for the first time after joining the old site. I dusted twice, then scrubbed with Murphy's oil soap (good for cleaning filthy wood). I even had to scrub all the knick knacks on the shelves, because they were way too dirty for a quick swipe. What a nice change to have it clean! I picked up a doggie poo off the living room floor, and a kitty barf off the kitchen floor. And urged ds20 to do up the sink full of dishes. That brought the house back to clean. I suppose some people would say it was squalorous to have all those little messes, but to someone like me, it was nothing. And...having young boys as the guests mean they didn't care a bit. They were too busy sliding down the ice in the driveway, hitting leftover party balloons to keep them in the air (or pop them), playing foozeball. And best of all, ds9 only had to move the dirty clothes from this morning off his floor, and they were able to play matchbox cars on his rug. Thanks, Mimi! TimeToChange, I am working on getting my finances under control and eating healthy. I find that I cannot do it all, so I am not focusing on improving the house at this point. But thanks for the suggestion! If I get the urge to clean something extra, I will definitely jump into your thread. I'm reading along on it, because it is so inspiring! Famtrad, I like that you are thinking ahead to next Christmas. You can do it. I never could before either, but something about this place makes the impossible very possible, for all of us.

Thanks, TTC! And Pickles, I have definitely told Jollie about the house being Jollie-licious. It was really hard to take the step to hire help, and to let her see my house while it was still kinda messy.
Thanks, GottaProb and Annie.
