I had to stop my declutter session to post this. I found my missing Social Security card!!! I had it replaced earlier this year as I couldn't find it anywhere and it turns up in a box of papers!! Now it's going to its proper home with my new card. Does anyone else ever get depressed while decluttering and wonder "why didn't I do this years ago?" I try to tell myself the past doesn't matter, the only important thing is that I am doing it now and I WILL SUCCEED!! I have emptied two big totes and three boxes and have two bags of garbage and a bag of things to bring to the nursing home where I work full of clothes and little items they can probably use for bingo prizes. I am so proud of myself tonight!!

sounds like you are making incredible progress... keep up the good work !!
i get depressed when i de clutter too... i see things that have gotten wrecked and get overwhelmed by the huge amount of stuff i have... but the only way to beat it is to "grab the bull by the horns" and keep sorting away if i let the depression and upset take over i will give up and thats not going to get me out of my cluttering ways

Does anyone else ever get depressed while decluttering and wonder "why didn't I do this years ago?" During some of my recent home reno experiences, I have been hugely upset, wondering, "Why didn't I do this years ago?" I don't get depressed: the 'feeling tone' is more like rage and fury and screaming inside. Or maybe that's just my variation on 'depressed.' Congratulations on the triumphs, and as I tell MYSELF: "better late than never"

Thank you all for your encouragement! I am so glad I found this wonderful place. I am motivated just reading about your triumphs. I love the ta da/to do method - it is really working for me not just at home, but also at work. It is a great feeling to move an item on my to do list to the ta da list. Just moving "type letter for Administrator " to the ta da list makes me happy. And I can't wait for the policies and procedures I need to type to get there.

Glad you let us know about this bright spot in the decluttering process! I look forward to the things I shall find in my bedroom when I finally break down and get to it! Welcome!

That's really cool that you are donating some items to the nursing facility. Back when I was a teenager, I used to volunteer at a nursing home. I remember the bingo nights and how excited the elderly residents felt when they won something. It somehow made their days brighter, especially to the residents that had no family that came to visit them. You have made their days so much brighter and have made a world of difference for them! YAAAAY!!

Fantastic! Now you have bags of garbage and a bag of give-aways that are mess and clutter gone from your house, and the bonus of finding your social security card. Well done!

I get angry and disgusted that I didn't do it sooner, or that I did it and then let it get messed up again, and I really get mad at myself when I find something practically brand new that I really liked that is ruined because it got misplaced and messed up and I never got to enjoy it.

More progress - cleaned out the filing cabinet!! That was a big one because it was filled with papers, mostly genealogy, but also everything else. I'm putting all the genealogy stuff in one tote to sort out at another time. My apartment is really small, but the clutter makes it way worse. I am not a good housekeeper, I think that I always thought "why clean, the mess makes it look dirty even when it isn't." Now I look forward to being able to clean and have the place really look clean. I think I am getting addicted to decluttering. It was hard to sleep last night because I kept thinking about what I was going to tackle today. My sister-in-law (big cleanie) came over tonight and said the place was looking neater. Huge compliment from her!
