Another way to use this feature:
If you originally registered under a username like
"TerriblyMessyUselessScum" ... and made a bunch of posts under that name that you want to KEEP,
but you've realized that maybe you wanted a more "positive" name ...
You can change your "Display Name" to "PerseveringAndHopeful" and still keep all your old posts under the same account.
However, your LOGON name would still be
TerriblyMessyUselessScum
So you'd log on with the old name, but the new DisplayName "PerseveringAndHopeful" would appear on all your posts -- ALL your posts, old and new.
NOTE:
Technically, people would have to send private messages to your old name, as private messages only work when sent to the logon name.
For example: If you want to send me a private message, just click on the
icon under my avatar. You won't have to think about it.
But if you want to write me but can't find one of my posts, or cannot find my profile, then you'd have to manually type in "courageouslylion" and NOT my full "display name".
However, that shouldn't matter, because if people want to write you, they usually people click on the icon. They don't have to type your name into the form.
All they have to do is find one of your posts, or find your profile in the "members" list (see link to "members" at top of your screen). Then click on the icon below your name at the left of the screen.
~~ The icon that looks like this:
And that will automatically set up a form to send a PM to your logon name.
A good thing is that if you SEND private messages to people, they'll see it as being from your new DisplayName.

Just a thought: If you choose to change your name this way, you might want to put a message in your signature line (inside your profile) that says:
NewDisplayName, formerly known as LogonName --
for example:
"PerseveringAndHopeful, formerly known as TerriblyMessyUselessScum"
-----
If this is all too complicated, you can just register with a new account under a new name, and post an announcement somewhere that you've changed your name.
But a new account won't link to your old posts. However, if you put the name change process in your signature line, the people can find the old name in the members list, and look up your old posts under your old profile.
