I am a third generation hoarder/clutterer/messy. Grandma was level 4 (did in two separate trailers), mom level 1ish when I was small, level 2 from my teens on. Mom's stays at level 2 only due to the valiant efforts of Dad, once he's gone, she'll be level 3 within 3 months. Aunt is level 2, my sis is 1-2. It's like a genetic thing in my family.
I vary from level 0-1 in my house, with two rooms approaching level 2. I know, deep down, that it would take very little for me to get to level 3. One good injury, sickness or setback, and I'd be there. I fight the good fight on a daily basis, the tips I've learned here have kept me at level 0 in my kitchen and one other room for longer than I've ever managed. I am tremendously thankful to all of you for that.
I take great inspiration from the people here. Seeing the pics of what one member can accomplish with the seemingly insurmountable gets me off my butt, because if that person could do that, then I can tackle this small pile here.
I am married to a paper/small item hoarder who was raised to never lift a finger (progress made there, but cleaning still mainly sits on my shoulders), and have two happy healthy destruction machines, son 3 and son 4.
Thank you for having me here, and thank you for here being the fantastic site that it is.

Welcome, Mew !
Hooray for the level 0 kitchen! I know for me, being able to cook easily makes it more likely I will do so, less likely to rely on meals out and fast food and junk.
I'm glad you decided to join us.

Welcome, Mew. I'm glad that you are finding help here at SooS.
I do believe that there is a genetic component to squalor and hoarding tendencies. However, I also firmly believe that people are resilient, and that new skills and habits can be practiced and learned.
I know you can do it, Mew, because many of us have. It takes time, but it is so freeing. Please keep up the good work of being willing to change. And begin to trust yourself. Third degree squalor may loom, but you will know how to fix it. There is a great post by DJ on the By-Ways board about how messes happen in life. So long as we deal with them, that isn't squalor!
Welcome!
