And it's Monday again, so I have to report last week's purging.
A couple of bigger items this week:
An old dresser that belonged to my father--I agonized over this one but finally let it go. I had to saw it in half so I could fit it in the dumpster! A TV/VCR An old bird cage 63 books 16 cooking magazines 1 bowl 4 T-Shirts 8 socks 4 pair jeans 1 wall hanging

I am starting moving preparations with low hanging fruit. I can take the boxes of mom's things from her house downtown to where we can store it for now. It will get it out of this house, and some of these things I may want in the new place --- a lot of this is kitchen things, dishes, etc. It is hers and not mine. But, it can go somewhere else for now.
I have about 10 boxes to load in the car to take, plus small miscellaneous things, in the morning. I plan to take as much as I can the next 3-4 days.

I moved a trunk full of boxes and things and a backseat full including floor space. It took me about 3 hours to put everything upstairs and away. I made a list of things to bring with me tomorrow, such as picture hanging things, Pledge and cleaning rags to dust the bookshelves. This is more an office than a storage unit. These things are going neatly into closets and onto shelves, and in cabinets. There are some pictures there that would look better on the walls than on the floor or laying on a table.
Included in what I took are kitchen boxes from mom's, the binding combs that I have in multiple sizes -- I am going to be taking the binding machine up there too. I also took a bin of new spiral notebooks -- that is a good place to store paper things. It took me about 3 hours to get everything up there.
While there, I unpacked all the horse yarn boxes and put the yarn into plastic bags so that we could drop off them as donations and I could reuse the boxes to help move things downtown. We then dropped the carful of yarn and felt and fabric off at Goodwill.
I have been gathering the next carload of boxes to go upstairs downtown. I have about 20-25 plus miscellaneous things. I have been at this a couple hours since I got home.

Dove, I'm so glad you have a move in the future too, it gives such a boost of energy!
Last week's purges:
1 very tall, rickety book case, disassembled, and half was put in the dumpster, the other half will go in there this week 52 books 1 pin 2 cat-shaped pencils 1 set of fuzzy chicks 1 locket 1 package of postcards 1 loose postcard

Yes a move does give a huge boost in energy to get things gone, Diane. It is hard for me to relax and just watch a movie, because I want to get things done. Even tonight, I got a backseat full of stuff to take downtown.
This morning I took a carload --- half went upstairs, half went to Goodwill. The cabinets from craft room and three shelf unit from hall went up there Yesterday. Mostly today I took the contents. I am going to keep my yarn stash there neatly. I know I can thin it out more, but not yet. I am going to have to fix the shelves that my nephew couldn't do. On the top of the cabinets, if I had been smart, I would have labeled them. But I didn't. Putting it together is like a puzzle. It screws together with wooden pegs. But it has to go together just right, or it doesn't work. He did it wrong.
Today, mom and I drove past the jewelbox house. I like it even more now.

I think moving always helps pare down the belongings.
I like both of your methods for moving.
Diane - you know exactly the size space that you will have and you know what will fit and what wont. I think this is helpful in determining what to take and what to let go. this is how my aunt moved. She measured the place she was moving to and measured her furniture and was able to plan around that. It still took a few years to gradually declutter and get to that point where she could move.
I also like Dove's way - pulling out the definite keepers and getting them out of the way, which makes it somewhat easier to sort through the remaining stuff and make decisions about releasing. Getting things out of the way though is key to making that work.
My goal is to just go through and get rid of what I can. Eventually I will be moving and I do know where I will be moving to (the two family we own in another city). So I know what space I will have (or not have).

Diane you are doing great! I can imagine how hard that dresser was to part with. I know you dont have a car so im wondering if youve thought about moving your stuff. When i moved here, i used a pod. They delivered it, placed it in my driveway. I provided a padlock. I was able to move my stuff into it, focusing in stuff that was big and wont fit in my car. Once it was loaded, they picked it up and delivered it to the new house. Then i was able to unpack it and move stuff into the house. They do it by the month so i had it one week at old house, three weeks at new house. I did it that way since i could have stuff prepped and ready to go to load it, then take my time unloading and unpacking. I think it was about $200. Cheaper than hiring movers, a bit more expensive than renting a truck. It gave me the luxury of pacing myself, most truck rentals are one day. Actually, i looked into renting a truck recently and it was $89 for one hour.

Swampy, I did think about a pod--but I couldn't use it because there's nowhere to park it here. My sister has a perfect space behind her back fence before the alley starts, but here I'm in a corner building in a neighborhood where there is a big parking shortage. In fact, in front of our building they took away part of our front lawn so they could put diagonal parking spaces. So I couldn't use up multiple parking spaces for a pod. Too bad, because I love the idea of moving things in by myself over the course of several days.
The other problem is that I have some very, very heavy stuff (like my fridge) which I would need to hire people to move anyway.
Movers will be very expensive, but hopefully this will be the last time I will ever need them, and they will be earning the money by moving all my heavy books--so I will have to bite the bullet and pay the cost.
I've started packing a few boxes with books, and it's hard work--I don't know how people move on short notice. Of course, most people don't have as much stuff as I have, but still! It's a lot of work.

A pod is a good idea for a lot of stuff, Unswamping thanks for suggesting that. Nice to know what options are out there. Like Diane, I will have to pay to have the piano moved, and the horse, and the other really heavy things.
One idea I have for clothes is to use the reusable shopping totes, I can put the clothes in there from the drawers, then put them back in the drawers. Right now, just an idea.
And in the meantime, we are busy moving all the definite keepers downtown for storage. And started into Christmas things. I want to get down to what I don't need or use right away. Christmas is like 9 months away, so I am really hoping that by then I can be making more concrete plans to move or be in a new place. Not sure right now.
But moving is excellent fuel and motivation to part with as much as possible. I am so thrilled that mom has started to sort through things of hers. Mostly little fiddly things. But there are zillions of those and that is hers to sort through.
I am so glad that before this I had been motivated to have company over because I already parted with lots of carloads of things for that, even though it didn't materialize. The goal right now is that several boxes of things as much as I can quickly load and get in the car each morning get to go. I think it was Saturday, we did take a load of stuff which left permanently. (TV, VCRs, VHS tapes, plus lots of other things)

I didn't do my Monday post--hardly anything went out last week, partly because of having to deal with my sister going to the hospital. But I will list anyway.

Oh, and in the "research" category, I did find a vet that treats birds within a reasonable distance from where I will be living. Not close, but the next closest is about 4 times as far! That will allow me to get more birds when I move.

Great job on purging so much, dtesposito I hope your sister is feeling better and back at home.
I packed 2 small boxes of books. I think half or more need to go to stage the house well. I am not parting with these entirely, but putting them in storage on shelves downtown. I had to keep telling myself that it is okay to take them. I want to remove at least one of the bookcases in the family room. Also, a box of Breyer stablemates, I packed up from china cabinet to take to chocolate shop. I decided to part with 2 Breyers which are quite faded and discolored from exposure through a window to sun. I will be donating those 2. I know people repaint them.
I am refreshing the garden. Right now, moving rocks which I got from the pasture over the years and lined up along the fence along the road. I am digging them out and bringing them to be used as a pretty rock border. Most are big and heavy -- as in I can only carry one rock at a time.
Something is leaving for somewhere every day. Today I took 5 boxes downtown, or maybe that was yesterday. But either way, making progress.
