Hello, I'm sidestep. It is so nice to see there are others like me here. I seem to be missing the "cleaning gene" and I have been "okay with it", however, growing up my family was the opposite. My folks have fairly recently died and my apathy towards my house increased exponentially as a result of their untimely deaths 2 years apart due to cancer (Dad in '04 & Mom in '06). They both were only 68 yo.
My childhood home was sold in '05 & I moved some of their furniture here then, where it still sits where the movers left it 5 years later. There is more that sits in a storage unit since '08, (after Mom's new hubby died). I had only planned to rent that storage unit for one month, and it has now been nearly 1.5 years. This FL heat is probably wrecking that stuff.
I haven't allowed my cleanie out of state sis in my house in 6 years, and only my old college roomie 1x since she insisted. (I offered to put us up in a motel during her visit--she wouldn't have it.)
It is time for me to begin to care to get things in order to make room for some my parents' things and to begin to enjoy life/my home without sidestepping and with my blinds open. I have held off on 4 household repairs due to the "state of the interior". The A/C, the fridge, the toidy, & now the telephone line. Not having ever been fortunate enough to have experienced marriage & children, I've always been a do-it-herselfer, won't ask for help kind of person but it appears I need the extra nudge to find 1st gear. Thank you all in advance for your time, expertise and support.

Welcome, Sidestep. I, too, missed the "cleaning gene", so I just have to make a conscious effort all the time to do what I need to do!

you know, I would barely blink if Science discovered that there really is a cleaning gene and that some of us really and truly were born without it!
I used to have a living room that, when clean, was a magazine picture.....sort of. An alternative magazine cover. I liked it but it was so rarely cleaned up. I live in a 600 sq ft apartment.
I changed tack a while ago and turned the whole living/dining room into an art studio. An art studio is more forgiving of some chaos I figure.

Hi Sidestep,
I'm new here too. Like you, I've also lost some family members fairly recently. I also come from a long line of organized, spotless housekeepers. I look forward to working together.

Thanks for the condolences ccl and sorry about your family too valor. Major thanks for the nudge Annie. It does appear that joining this site is exactly what I have been needing as I have seriously been lacking in the "get around to it" department. I just got my 1st digital cam today so that will certainly help ratchet up the accountability factor. Many thanks to those that have posted their pics as I find those most inspirational.
