I am having guests for dinner tonight. They're good friends, and are getting married at the end of May. So it's going to be a not-too-formal thing. That being said, this is the first real "grown-up" dinner party I will have ever had. There was that one time on Hallowe'en when I had them and my girlfriend over, but we just sat around and had pizza while giving out candy to the trick-or-treaters. I am very excited about this. That being said, the place is not exactly pristine. I've been running around most of the day getting groceries and a couple of things I hadn't realized I didn't have, which are sort of important for this kind of dinner: a wooden salad bowl, and salt and pepper shakers that don't look like I stole them from a diner. Right now I'm roasting red peppers on the stove, and I have to give the bathroom a quick once-over. I also have to change out the cat pans, because they're overdue and it's not nice for guests to have to put up with that. I have a couple of small boxes that have been living in my dining room since I moved in, and they're going to be moved to the basement until I can figure out what to do with them. I got some new place mats for my dining room table, and actually dug out some pretty orange candles that will go nicely with my set-up. I regret somewhat not having a nice centerpiece (flowers would have been nice), but it looks pretty nice anyway, especially with the *** Susan in the middle of the table. I am going to do some prep work now for the rest of the meal so that all that's left for me to do when they get here is toss stuff into the pan (I'm making curry chicken with rice and broccoli). If you had told me when I first started posting here in November of 2006 that one day I would be preparing for a real dinner party without feeling as though I was about to lose my mind, I would have laughed at you. I'm just sharing this, and when I find my camera cable (still AWOL, sadly) I will post photos, so that those of you who are feeling down or unmotivated will know that it CAN be done. Three years ago I was knee-deep (literally!) in 3rd-degree squalor. ~Mouse

What an accomplishment! I have come a long way, but still run around like a headless chicken when having dinner guests!
But at least we can have dinner guests! That alone is huge!
Enjoy!

Bravo! Extra special kudos to you for finding usable candles instead of having to go out and buy those too! Enjoy your dinner and your company.

The dinner guests have been and gone, and dinner was a big hit! I didn't take any photos, unfortunately, as they arrived before I got all set up, but the meal was very tasty, including the "experiments" I made as an entrée and dessert. Now I have the cleanup to do. It shouldn't be too bad, but I've had a fair amount of wine and plain don't feel like it. ~Mouse
