I have new floors now.
For a long time, I have been contemplating what to do with the floors in my house. I rent, but I can pretty much do whatever I want. I have pets and so I knew my landlord didn't want to put a lot of money into repairs that the pets would just mess up. I understand.
The floors were first dirty, nasty carpet from the previous tenants. It was pulled up shortly after we moved in. The floor underneath was wood parquet that had been ruined by the previous tenant (whatever ruined the carpet soaked through and ruined the wood) and just by the ravages of time. Plus my pets were not kind to it. Anyway...
I asked permission to put in vinyl tile floor, offering to pay for it. My landlord thought about it, and decided it was something he should pay for, and he did. The floor guys finished today, and it is great. The bad part is the new floor makes the rest of the house look even worse (smudged walls, cracks in ceiling, cobwebs, etc.) Kind of like my new elegant faucet in my dingy old bathroom.
I am so excited now that if (ok, when) the pets have an accident, I will be able to easily clean it. That is so great!
The floor in 2 areas was not replaced. One is the bathroom, and that's fine, the floor in there is OK. The other is a sunken sun room. The floor in there needs to be scrubbed, sanded, sealed?, primed, painted. It will be a huge project. I'll work on that eventually.
It is AMAZING how much better the house smells. I could walk from one room with new floor into another room with old floor and the difference was vast!
So, so happy!

that is wonderful and yes- sometimes new brings out the ugly but also gives us courage to change what we can and accept what we cannot change- hugs

Vinyl is an excellent choice. I wish my whole apartment could be vinyl. I actually hate carpet. Not only is it a dreadful chore to keep it clean and stain-free, but it's a huge germ sponge if you ask me!

Vinyl is an excellent choice. I wish my whole apartment could be vinyl. I actually hate carpet. Not only is it a dreadful chore to keep it clean and stain-free, but it's a huge germ sponge if you ask me! I hate carpet too! Just got new vinyl tile in the kitchen (yay!) and am having wood laminate flooring installed in the living room next week. So, we've been priming and painting EVERYTHING (baseboards, door facings, walls, ceiling) before the flooring is actually installed. I wish we could replace the carpet upstairs because it is old and I know there's all kinds of goobie-goobies in it even though I try to keep it vacuumed and cleaned. I also know what you mean, OP, about getting something new which makes you think what's left looks worse. BUT, it is a great feeling and motivator to know you can do it and bit by bit, it will get better and you will get it done. Just keep on keepin' on and congrats on the floors and new fixtures and stuff! BF

Congratulations on the new flooring. I would love new flooring. Eventually we are going to replace all of our carpet with laminate in some rooms and vinyl in others. I can so relate to the domino effect. We have seen that here, as one thing changes you are drawn to change the next to keep up. I guess that is the kind of momentum we need to gain.

Congrats on the new floors, Mariposa! That's a big area to get improved all at once, yay! And congrats on your new faucet, too, I remember getting a new bathroom sink faucet a few years ago and to this DAY it makes me happy every time I turn on the water! Awesome steps forward!
