Hi!
Probably I should introduce myself more in detail, but I'm so excited I found this site that I have to leave a quick note before leaving for work. I'm so happy that I found a place where I could talk about my shameful problem of living in squalor. I'm single and I've been living in a very small studio for the last 8 years -- with a small dog. While I've already lived alone in the past, it's the first time that clutter and dirtiness have become a major problem. I've already tried several times to unclutter and keep things tidy but I found I had two major problems:
- Space. Especially in two domains: clothes and books. Even after sorting my clothes and throwing away what is too old, not the right size or never worn, there is no way all of it will fit in my medium-size wardrobe. For books, it's even worse, I only have a tiny shelf. I don't have the place for a bigger one and anyway I can't throw away the small one because it belongs to my landlord. The book problem tends to be fixing itself because my dog keeps destroying those I pile on the floor XD but I still buy new ones once in a while.
- Skills (or money). The wallpaper and the carpet need replacing (badly) and everything needs a fresh layer of paint (it already wasn't new when I moved in , so you can imagine), but I'm too unpractical and clumsy to do it. I can't afford a professional and even if I could, I'm too ashamed to let anyone in.
So, that's it... I'm not a native English speaker, so please be patient if I'm not always as easy to understand as I'm like.

Welcome! This might be a little forward but, Why don't you consider moving? You rent may run you more but it may be worth it to get a fresh start. Just do some research and go visit other places. Then you can do a very strict -What have I really used in the past year throwing out session. Yes ,it would be a lot of work but it would be well worth it. I love books too but have learned to use the library and let those guys store the books. I good trick to your wardrobe is what would you pack if you were going on an extended vacation that required casual and buisness as well.Everything else could go within reason.

Welcome, Chthonia !
This woman with a library that is stuffed to bursting welcomes another book lover heartily.
It's good to have you here.

By the way, I would not have known you were not a native English speaker if you hadn't mentioned it.

Nice to meet you! I remember the days of a studio apartment--nowhere to go to get away from the mess, and in my case, the unemployed boyfriend. You will find lots of support here.

Thank you for your warm welcome!
I can't realistically move because I live in a very large city where accommodations are scarce and rents are through the roof. With my salary I can't afford better than a small studio anyway, so the space problem will always be there. Plus landlords demand unreasonable guaranties, and people literally fight over 9 sq. meter "maid's rooms". I found my studio by sheer luck, and if my landlord asks me out (either because he finds out about the mess or because he just needs the studio) I'm on the street. I'm not alone in this situation, it's the same for everyone with an average-to-low salary.

Welcome, Chthonia. Like MessyMimi said, your English is very very good!
I have been surprised by how much easier it is to manage as I have let stuff go. And I was surprised by how much stuff it was possible to get rid of...it kind of came off in layers, but it did go. And now I have much more room.
