Here's christmasshopper's "capsule wardrobe", which she shared with us in chat. She was inspired by a tv show, where a stylist arranged a whole week's wardrobe with 24 items of clothing for all occasions. Christmasshoper's wardrobe includes: 3 vest tops (red, white, blue), a dressy navy top, a casual navy top, white cropped jeans, denim bootcut jeans, cropped navy capri pants, a white cardigan, a navy smart jacket, a navy & white print dress, white sandals, red sandals. plus a red cardigan, pair of black trousers, funeral dress plus a pair of black high heels, a pair of black boots & a pair of red boots plus a winter coat __________ It might help us when downsizing our wardrobes, and arranging a wardrobe that actually works.

Oh man, I have to be honest: I can't do that. We have pretty marked seasons for starters, so I need to have summer & winter clothes, with some inbetween items for fall & spring.

A capsule wardrobe is definitely the way to go. I had an avalanche each time I opened my wardrobe door, but didn't have the will to empty it and sort it all out. After watching a television programme about capsule wardrobes I decided I wanted one for my holiday. So with my son's help I ordered some new mix and match stuff from a mail order catalogue. I went away for 2 weeks and only took the new capsule wardrobe and some old swimwear. It was great. I felt as though I had plenty to wear, and it was lovely not having to dig for clothes and wearing clothes that weren't creasey because they had been crammed in the wardrobe. Since I came home I have continues to wear the capsule wardrobe and have hardly worn any of my old stuff. After a month I decided to give my old clothes away. I did it gradually, at first just giving away clothes I hardly ever wore before. I didn't miss them. Last week I was ruthless. I gave away 32 tops, 11 pairs of trousers, all my skirts and 5 dresses, all in one go. I took them round to a neighbours house who said she would share them amongst her friends, and give any left over to a charity shop. I saw her yesterday and none made it to the charity shop. Her friends took them all. It feels good to know that my unloved clothes are wanted by someone else...and my wardrobe is now so tidy

Yearning4order, in our climate, we could do this with adding a raincoat, hat or umbrella, and 1-2 cold-weather outfits.
Even if we don't part with the rest of our wardrobe, the capsule eardrobe would ensure that we always have something clean and appropriate to wear.

I am trying to put together a capsule wardrobe for my new job....I'm not sure where to start....I am thinking brown trousers and jacket and skirt that match.....I like brown even though I wear a lot of black...right now black doesn't feel right.....Wow! I am so scared of buying the wrong thing.....this may be harder than I thought.... Great thread!

You might try to think how many OUTFITS you need for your work, which makes, I guess, 3-5 different outfits. That means either 1 or 3 or 5 bottom parts (a skirt or trousers) and anything from 3-5 different tops (blouses, sweaters, or shirts). Then, for the two days of weekend, you need casual outfits that fit your leisure time. Do you work in garden? Do you sit on your sofa the whole day? Do you wrestle feed your toddler? Do you go out in the evening for cocktails? Do you go for a hiking trip? A book that helped me a lot in organizing my wardrobe is "Simple isn't Easy" by Olivia Goldsmith and Amy Fine Collins www.amazon.com/Simple-Isnt-Easy-Personal-Fantastic/dp/0061093947/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1247306794&sr=8-1 Earlier, before kids, it helped me, and saved me much nervouseness during the working mornings, to spare an hour during the weekend, and combine outfits to wear for the whole week. I'd put my clean and ironed clothes on the bed, and find a matching shirt/blouse/sweater for each pair of trousers or skirt. Then I'd hang the combined outfits into my closet, and Monday morning - I only had to choose which outfit I liked most. I used to wear one outfit two days in a row, but maybe for some jobs it has to be a different outfit for each working day (or in the summer when one sweats more). I hope this helps some.
