He came, with a chap to estimate the cost of replacement windows which took an hour - a whole hour! Mind you the chap was asking about £15000 (That's about $25000) (ye gods!) so maybe he though he'd better earn his fee. Landlord made only a couple of comments about the clutter, and none about the cleanliness so that wasn't too bad, he even admired my new funky green stripy door mat. He's coming back on Wednesday with another chap to give an estimate of the cost. But at least I'm ready for that. Huge thanks to all the chatters for helping thru this. Landlord also took one look at our beat up couch and declared it dead and told me to get rid of it and he'll give us a new one. Woohoo! It is the most uncomfortable couch in the world. Quite how we are supposed to haul it downstairs I do not know, but we will do it somehow. I suppose a new couch will be pocket change to him after the amount the windows are costing. So, not a bad morning, all in all.

Well done limegreen on surviving a landlord visit! (boy am I glad I'm not renting anymore) To have a landlord who is probably going to be in a bad mood about spending so much money only make minor comments about clutter is fantastic. You must have done a great job!
And yay for new windows and a new sofa! With any luck whoever comes to deliver the new sofa might be able to get the old one downstairs for you. I know when we bought ours last year we were able to pay the delivery company £20 to remove and dispose of the old one which made life much easier.

I htink he was embarrassed that the window guy had to sit on my beat up couch. And he is family, so it makes him look bad if our stuff is falling apart. Whatever his motivations, I and my sore back will be glad to have new seating arrangements. I'm going to look at the IKEA catalogue and see what I might suggest to him.

You can always take a page out of DJ's book and saw the couch into pieces. It's easier to remove and you get some of your frustrations out on how uncomfortable it has been by taking destructive tools to it.
Congrats on surviving the visit.

I actually rather fancy taking an axe to the couch, but I know it got up the stair in one piece and therefore should go down that way also. Plus I could take a leaf out of the washing machine delivery guy's book, when he took our old one away he balanced it on the top step and kicked it down stairs - our building is stone built, so no damage was done, except to my blood pressure as I was sure he was gonna kick it right through the window. Lanlord sent an email asking me to look through the IKEA catalogue with a big hint in brackets as a PS: (Prezzi contenuti!)* I think he is still reeling form the windows quote. *(Low cost!)

The City, with commendable promtitude have emailed back saying they will collect the dead couch on Friday and I have to have it out on the street by seven in the morning. Yeehaw, I get to push the couch downstairs! And I found two chairs and an ottoman in the IKEA catalogue which I shall wave gently in front of the Landlord tomorrow. He will like them, they are definitely less expensive than a new couch. And they will go batter with my exisiting furniture - a mix of stuff I own and stuff he owns, and mostly light oak (the old couch is dark brown). If I am unable to push the couch downstairs I will prevail upon the two young men who live upstairs. Neither of them would want to be shown up infront of their partners for not helping a woman shift a couch, now would they?

Yay for windows and new furniture!!!! You did a great job getting ready for the visit. Whoohoo for Limegreen! The new furniture sounds really nice. I think he will like your idea. I am with you on asking the guys upstairs, let them posture for their partners and help you in the process.

Landlord arrived late for other window guy who I was already showing round the house when he arrived. LL grumpy with me but hardly my fault he was late (transpired that he had met some Italian tourists and was yapping so long with them he made himself late, silly man). But since he was cross he took it out on me, and I felt my good feelings from Monday evaporate. But he is happy with the chairs and the ottoman we have chosen, but not happy that you can't reserve stuff online with IKEA or that their delivery service doesn't cover Scotland, nethier of which are my fault, but the way he was carrying on, you would think it was. Gaah!
He was hazy about when he would go to IKEA, so I suggested I come with and that we do it on Friday. He didn't say yes, but then, he didn't say no either. Chances are we'll be sitting on dining chairs, or cushions on the floor, for a week.
I know it's cluttery here, but he was really quite rude.
It was probably too much to expect that having formed a plan he would immediately implement it.

drat!! there goes the poem I wrote in my head, but had no 'puter to post --
the shattered window seems to make for our LimeGreen a lucky break
her old sofa will soon be gone replaced by a divine divan!!
now... what rhymes with ottoman? (there's one in now we are six, I think...)
"...falling off the ottoman but generally seems to lack the energy to clamber back."
stay tuned...
