Well today was the day! It turned out to be an electrical component that went out, wasn't a terribly expensive repair thank goodness. I'm very excited to have my dishwasher, my sweet sweet dishwasher back! I have to confess the one side effect of challenge train dishwashing is that I came to see that I do have a capability to wash dishes by hand and not have it be nightmarish. The worst squalor in the kitchen was dealt with by *handwashing*. You have no idea what a change that is for me, as I've always thought I simply couldn't do life without a dishwasher. Now the only remaining issue is that the dishwasher sat for months with icky water and a partial load of dirty dishes, so it stinks, stinks, stinks. The repair person suggested running a load of 1/4 cup bleach (no more than that, I guess it's hard on the seals) to kill off anything that was growing in their. The smell is still pretty disgusting though. Do you have any suggestions on how to beat that smell? OMG SOMEONE WAS IN MY HOUSE AND I DIDN'T DIE!!!! Wow, that just occurred to me...

Wonderful! I think bleach is the best thing to take care of the odor.
If you don't want to use chlorine bleach, you could run a load with just some baking soda, then another load with a cup or so of vinegar. I do this with my washing machine; I also put it down my drains and toilets.
Congrats on your dishwasher coming back to life.

Hooray for dishwashers!
Hooray for letting people in!
I've heard of people running lemonade powdered drink mix through them to clean them.
