What do you think Kim and Aggie would generally find if they visited the homes a year later rather than after two weeks? At two weeks, some of the homeowners have done a remarkable job - I always wonder about down the road.
I know on the other show "Clean House" they do follow-ups as part of their annual awards, so you do get to see some homes a year later. But the types of homes shown on those two shows are different: generally, "How Clean" shows some squalor and "Clean House" shows clutter.

I haven't watched in ages, though I did notice they had new episodes...
As I was flipping channels, I caught the end of an episode and saw that in this home, they actually did return later... I think it was either one or two years later. I didn't really stick around to see it all, but the gist is that the person had generally kept up with the cleaning, but not so well with the clutter.

I think it would be a mixed bag. The massive cleaning will be a wake up call for some people and they'll work hard to change and stay on top of it. The show becomes their watershed, and they improve. I think this would be far fewer than the ones who fall back into old habits.
If the show just cleans and walks away, most people will probably return to some level of squalor a year or two later. I mean, how often have most of us cleaned up only to fall back into squalor again. It's like losing 50 pounds and regaining 60. Major changes have to be made and kept or things just go on as before and the work is all undone.

I agree with clutterfree. I think most return to what they were before. The ones that the mess is due to a specific trauma, like the death of a spouse, I think can move beyond with the help of the show. I do watch both the shows though. I even have the 15 yr old son that watches with me and knows the hosts. Too funny really. I mostly am amazed that these people are brave enough to let the camera crews in.

I mostly am amazed that these people are brave enough to let the camera crews in. Exactly my thoughts too. I've watched most of the shows and they seem to involve a high level of squalor but often not hoarding as such. In some ways this seems worse, from a "what would the neighbours think?" point of view. Hoarding can be recognised as a psychological problem and attract some sympathy but just being messy and never cleaning would be more likely to attract censure. Kim and Aggie can appear a bit patronising but on the whole they treat the people sympathetically and I think in many cases they have a lasting effect - at least I hope so. A lot will depend on motivation, you'd need to be strongly motivated to change if you let cameras in.

In some of the How Clean is Your House shows they do return a year later, and in one case the person had returned a lot of clutter to the home, but they were surprisingly gentle about it, Kim said she understood this person loved their cluttter and that so long as it wasn't interfering with the smooth runnuing of the house it was okay. I felt quite heartened by that.

The episode that was sad for me was 'PAT'who lived in a tiny bed sit w/her three dogs. They hired a big skip/tip/dumpster and it was very emotional.Wonder what they throw away that is valuable.Pat was a lovely jolly lady and seems liberated @ the end,but still so emotional, our possessions.hard to let go.gg
