WTG Catbiscuit...I am so proud of you! Or saving a toy until I find the last missing piece before giving away. I think sometimes we should claim amnesty and just fill up the trash can . I think I have a heightened sense of responsibility with possessions even after I decide that I can't use them. This is me...OMG! I have a set of drawers full to the brim of jigsaw puzzles with one or 2 pieces missing, bits of toys, that I keep thinking one day I will find the other bit as I don't like giving them to charity with a bit missing. Oh dear I think what I have really been missing is actually the right attitude and I need to just toss it all away asap.

Hey Shell! I got this question in chat today and could not for the life of me get the US and Canada gals to understand what a "ute" is!! I posted a link and they voted to call it a "cruck" - a cross between a car and a truck! Maybe a sporty pick-up? www.holden.com.au/vehicles/UteHope this helps! Catbiscuit xx

Hi Mrs Mess! Thanks so much for your encouragement and nice words - made my day! I hope all is well in your world and don't stress about your puzzles and toys, you will figure out what to do with them one day Maybe you can stick a post-it note on them saying "x amount of pieces are missing" then donate them to St Vinnies, that way the staff will know and the decision is then theirs and not yours to make!! Pass the buck ! I often see stuff for sale with notes about missing pieces at St Vinnies - I don't think they care! Catbiscuit xx

I'm late coming to the party, but this is what I tossed last year. I never looked in a single box. You're seeing the view from the door, looking left. If you looked to the right, it wasn't as long, but it was packed with furniture. A sofa, 2 chests of drawers, a couple of end tables, a repurpused wooden Victrola stand that I loved as a child... I never looked. I just told the 1-800-JUNK guys to empty the space, and they did. This is what it looked like then: Gone gone. Bye bye. Empty space. Mr. MiSC has talked about maybe putting some rubbermaid bins of out of season clothes out there, and it shakes me in my shoes. I don't want ANYTHING in there now, which is a huge waste of space, so I've got to get this straight in my head. P.S. I also chucked a perfectly good portable dishwasher from the kitchen because we just plain needed the space. That's worked out very well.

MiSC WOW Just tossed it all without looking in a single box! Amazing... good job.
I couldn't do that thought...I WOULD have to look in every single box. But I am pretty ruthless about all the empty boxes themselves...out!! And, for me, I would have to donate/freecycle (the portable dishwasher) everything I could that was, um..yep, useable. I could never just have 1-800-junk just do a big sweep, I would have to sort through for sure But that's me ha. Good for you to have the courage to just --get it out!!

We've had UTE discussions on SOS before, long time ago. the reason you had trouble explaining is that we do not have that type fo vehicle here exactly. We have sport utility vehicles, which are usually used by the same people who used to favour mini-vans, though they can sometimes carry a smaller load in the back than a Ute. sometimes they are like big hard top jeeps with now "tray".
A pick up truck is bigger than a UTE and has a bigger "tray" in the back. We don't call them a "tray" actually but as a bicycle user I dont even know what its called.
I like this thread but its making me a bit nervous, especially mouse anne's first post, I want to run there and save things.

And, for me, I would have to donate/freecycle (the portable dishwasher) everything I could that was, um..yep, useable. I could never just have 1-800-junk just do a big sweep, I would have to sort through for sure I started with "I can freecycle/garage sale that....." but the truth was that a. It would have sat in my house until I got around to posting it. b. Getting people to follow through on pick up appointments is hit and miss. c. We needed the space. Period. It was all perfectly good stuff. But as a hoarder -- or should I say AND as a hoarder, I needed to just open my arms up wide and say, "Go away." So I did. Now, the attic is a different matter. There are a brazillion full boxes up there, and they all need sorting. I've found too many valuable items mixed up with the junk up there. The only photograph I have of my grandma was in a box with years-old bills. I have to sort through all of it. The stuff in the shed was pretty much all objects. Stuff. The stuff in the attic is things that have some sort of value to me. The problem is, I can't go upstairs. My husband can, but I fall down the stairs. No lie. I fell down those stairs once when I was 5 months pregnant (or was it 7?) I simply cannot navigate the tall, narrow stairs. And with me as heavy as I am, I simply can't SEE where I'm going. I can't see my own feet. I can get up there, but not down. If I could just get one box of stuff down at a time, maybe I could sort. I have to think about this. Maybe this weekend Mr. MiSC and I can put our heads together and figure something out.

I have been cleaning out cupboards and drawers and boxes too - 20 plus years in the same place does that to a person.
Tore up more books - filled up trash bags - threw away something from the patio too.
Misc - can hubby bring down one or 2 boxes at at time for you to go through in say the living room while you watch tv or something? If it is too heavy - maybe a friend can help him?

Made tremendous progress yesterday with family recovery -- hubbie is just as much of a clutterer as I am but was always able to identify my issues before his own. Instead of looking at the things that really needed to go, he'd threaten to get rid of things that legitimately get used on a daily basis and would have value to the average "normal" person. He is missing some small savings bonds from about 10 years ago and I found some metal tins in the garage that had papers in them. I started going through them WITH HIM, letting him decide what needed to keep and what needed to go. How about every cancelled check and bank statement from 1985 to 2002 (from divorce from 1st wife through divorce from 3rd) -- out the door. Sympathy cards from father's funeral (about 1/2 dozen) - not ready to let go of yet, put in small box. First wedding ring -- put in the jewelry box upstairs for the grandchildren rather than in the bottom of a junk pile. Ended up pulling 4 plastic boxes from the upstairs closet of his mother's things (she died in 1999). All her tax returns from 1980 to present -- burn in the back yard this evening. My mother-in-law's voter registration card from 1960s -- goes in the little box too. Old sections of newspapers for everyone's graduation, etc -- had been stored in white plastic bags -- getting acid-free sleeves and preserving what is worthwhile (Kennedy election/assassination) -- found one from 1940 showing names and draft #s for all men in our County -- my husband is 65 years old and now knows his father's draft number. I will pass these on to the kids/grandkids because history is sort of our thing. Some may go to local historical society that is starting out because they are in great shape. Glad we went through this part of the process TOGETHER because we have two brains figuring out what is worth keeping and what is not -- obviously we both come from long lines of people who keep things but apparently my mother-in-law did a better job of just keeping what was really important. It just dawned on me -- now he's going to expect ME to be willing to go through some boxes of MY mother's stuff tonight -- ya'll are going to be able to see the flames in the backyard clear in Canada.

BTW - in the states, the back of a pick-up is a "bed" -- every time I think about filling up the pickup bed with boxes of my stuff, I just have to go lie down until it passes
