- have you considered an alternative bed? I've considered an alternative bedroom! such as this: honeymoon.expertfamilytravel.com/dest-tahiti-KiaOra.htmNot sure about an alternative bed. I'll ponder that. Perhaps this? www.honeymooncruiseshopper.com/BackgroundHammock.jpgClarification: I don't actually live in the South Pacific. So the ideas from my these photo links are impractical for me. But ... I would like to visit the South Pacific someday. In the meantime, perhaps I could consider an ocean decor for my bedroom? Hmmmmmmm. --------------- Back to topic of my current bedding needs .... *hammock *Japanese futon with washable futon cover *I can't think of more at the moment, but I know there are many other kinds of beds out there. I would guess that the majority of people in the world sleep in something other than what we in America would consider to be a "standard" bed. I'll think about it. Thanks.

I would love to have a hammock. I've never slept in one, but they sure look comfy. If I ever have a yard of my own, I plan to get one.
I've been trying to give my apt. a more tropical feel. Although I hardly ever go to the beach, I love the tropics. I'm trying to get that atmosphere a little more in my place, so that I feel like I'm on vacation while I'm actually home. (Its crazy, I know).

FWIW.. I know that it's a style, especially in Europe, IIRC, to use a duvet (puffy quilt/comforter) instead of sheets and blankets. These have washable covers which can be changed often for hygiene.
A duvet might work for you in place of a quilt; stash an extra cover and a bottom sheet for when company comes over. Whisk off the old cover, put a bottom sheet on the bed, a new cover on the duvet, and viola, comfy, sanitary and stylish.

I lived in japan and slept on a japanese futon. this was a 1 inch thick foam mattress covered in material, which you put onthe floor. (nothing to do with sofabed).
I often couldn't be bothered to put sheets on it. since it seemed to be cotton I found it perfeectly comfortable even though I quite like sheets. gradually (I really don't sweat much) I sweated a stain into the middle.
I actually placed my puny 1 inch thick mattress on top of 3 others left behind by the previous 3 teachers, 2 of which had rather nasty sweat stains onthem that I didn't understand when I first saw them. I planned to throw them out, but another teacher told me I'd need them or my back would hurt, and she was right. but I thought those other people were so gross, until I achieved the same result, just OCCASIONALY not putting on a sheet.
Why am I sayign this? well I think you should go get one like i had. you can then throw it out once a year or so. i'll see if I can find a picture.
modifying to add that you should put it on top of your existing bed, obviously.

hmmm I wonder if it would be too hard to sleep comfortably on one of the japanses futons in that pic comfortable especailly if you were heavy or had achy spots. Although- the article mentioned an air thingy in between two futons- I would have them slipping and sliding all over each other with all over my nighttime acrobatics. And I dont' mean playing mattress polo with my BF when he comes over. Lord - we would wind up on the other side of the room. And we are pretty tame. I just move around a lot. It even irritates the dog and cat. I laughed out loud when I read a line from a Garrison Keiller book about a family of restless sleepers-I could relate- " he was like a drowning man in rough seas waving to search planes passing overhead".
I have not ever found a futon that was comfortable but All I had were cheap ones.... But Ikea----------- they have cheap to wonderful. And the slippy covers fit really tight( but again- maybe they are like sheets- or worse- like couch covers) Those japanese futons look cool if you could put them on a box spring to make them a little more comfy. Again- I think- you have to figure out- what - it is about the mattress you like ( or can stand) and what is it about the sheets you hate. If you like the feel of nice cotton or some other fabric- but hate the idea of sheets- then maybe a futon on top of your boxspring- that is covered with a fabric that you like maybe wold work.
One thing I didn't like about sleeping so close to the ground-and I slept on matresses with out box springs plenty of times = is that spiders can get to you...... Course if you dont' have spiders... A hammock? Lord not for me. I could never get out of that thing. And my ceiling cound't handle it- and hahahahaha! if I was trying to have a romantic night- it could be a macrame disaster. But it is interesting what people are coming up with.
If you have some money to toss around- then to replace the futon or pad- when something gets icky- hey that might work.
I think you also have to look at how much you weigh- if you are a big girl or a little girl. I am am Ikea fan- although I never have any money to go there- they have a lot of European options that might work - you could modify. Maybe a sturdy frame with a nice featherbed you could replace every couple of years?( they are dreamy) or just the featherbed on your boxspring. I once slept on a canvas covered cot like bed that was very comfy- for months. It was a double and from Europe. Nice and springy. And I am not a teeny gal.
Oh poop. Well just keep thinking what you like and dont' like and WHY. If you sew or know anyone that does- that may give you a couple more options if you find a stuctural idea that works for you and just need the fabric thing to do.
I think there is probably something simple out there. Do you need a lot of support? That is the first thing I would look at.
I am avoiding doing crap I want to do by coming back here to read and post. It is working pretty good.

I posted a comment /question on the japanese futon site regarding the slipping sliding/ comfort issues but it disappeared before I thought to copy and paste here. It said they would review it and put it on there if they decided I wasn't a nut. So I bookmarked it and will be interested to see what they say. I am actually kind of interested. Might be cool to put on a platform like bed so not on the floor where the spiders are. In my dreams of the future. With some slide out drawers underneath. I do not like my bed. It hurts to sleep in it. I think if I loved or even liked it- it would make life so much nicer. Probably others feel the same way. So who knows Lioness- this thread may help you and other folks too. I still am not doing the dishes! Bizzy

Here's an idea that might work when you have guests. Simply buy a plain white mattress cover, the kind that zips preferably, and place that on the bed when a guest comes. To those who are finicky about cleanliness, they will look and say "Oooo, how nice. A covered mattress! Now I can sleep on it with no worry."

Okay, here are my two cents!
To clean the mattress-- Resolve upholstery cleaner.
Beauty and sleep preference issues: Buy a beautiful quilt which you can sleep under, but can also use to "make the bed" during the day.
Overnight romantic guest: keep one bottom sheet to use on these occasions. Tell them you don't usually use a top sheet, but that you'd be willing to put one on if they'd be more comfortable. Wash the quilt fairly often.
It seems that quite a lot of people alter from the 2 sheets and blanket routine!!
Best luck, Wendy

Lioness, I understand why you are sensitive in discussing this. I guess people don't think that others may do things differently than they do. My neighbor never sleeps in his bed under the cover - he may not even have sheets on the bed (we are not that close, , and I never asked). He has a quilt on it and sleeps on top of the quilt under an afghan. So, I don't think you are that unusual. If you don't like bedding and can't sleep with it, then hey, it's your bed and you need to sleep. It's just like the tucking vs. non-tucking issue with top sheets and blankets - personal preference. You got some great ideas and I hope one of them works for you. If you have a romantic guest over, they can do like my neighbor does - sleep on top of your quilt with an afghan or blanket on top of them if they'd like and you can do as you like. Since they will be in your home, they will need to adapt. Who knows, you may meet someone who has the same preference as you do in bedding. I'm sure you will figure out the other stuff - I just recently learned that I should be vacuuming my mattress. I never thought about it and I don't recall my mother ever doing that. Now, I'm going to have to ask her I also saw on QVC one of those Haan steam cleaners that work with pure tap water and they have a mattress attachment that will refresh the mattress and sanitize it. Again, something I never thought of either. I don't know that I have been any help with advice, but I just wanted to let you know that it's perfectly okay for you to sleep however you please without being judged or made to feel squalory about it.

lioness, i have a pillowy mattress cover that fits great, feels great, and never slides off the bed, and i am a kicker and a flailer in my sleep! i too often skip the top sheet. i have a comforter and a nice washable cover for it, and sleep under that. in summer i use just a washable bedspread. what i love about the comforter is that all i have to do to make the bed is pull it up (after doing dj's style of airing out the bed for awhile)) and my bed is instantly made in about ten seconds with no effort! oh, and i love the idea of tropical themed homes! i hope you go for it! my apt. looks like "a little taste of mexico around days of the dead time, mixed with tropical feel and lots of color. we can't paint our apts colors, so i make up for it with the stuff. the bright light colors lift my spirits in these dark pacific northwest days.

Maybe you could go to a fabric store and fondle the fabrics? You might be pleasantly surprised.

Re-the last few posts
I love love love the aesthetic of old Japanese movies--a thin washable pad with a block type pillow that is either rolled up in the day time or on a low platform.
Sleek and stylish
Could you stand not to have a mattress under you though? No mattress, no need of mattress protection. No need of covering up mattress for appearance's sake, either.

I am making these assumptions: 1. You want your bed to look "normal" when the romantic partner is around. 2. You don't want to change much or anything about the way your bed feels to you now since you sleep well. 3. You want to be sensitive to smells for the sake of the romantic partner. 4. You want a low maintenance solution. So...here's my idea: Clean the current mattress with fabric cleaner, and air it out as well as you can. If you could leave it outdoors on a sunny day it would probably freshen it up quite a bit. Then, before you invite someone over for a romantic evening, have a friend with a good nose come do a smell test for you. Due to your condition, this wouldn't seem odd, nor would it seem odd if an umpleasant smell was encountered. Step Two: Once the mattress is clean, consider buying a couple of these (it's washable, but you probably want to have one to keep on the bed and another one for when the bed gets soiled and you need to change it quickly): www.designerlinensoutlet.com/store/product1.asp?SID=1&product_id=113838&ProdName=Sleepsations+Jacquard+Ticking+Mattress+Pad+with+"Expand-a-Grip"+&mcode=bam_nt The price is similar to that of a nice sheet set. This would allow you to keep the feel of the current sleeping arrangement, but have something that is removable and washable for hygenic purposes. You can continue to use quilts as covering - that isn't really odd at all. If you prefer a more decorative look, buy a bedspread or comforter to cover up the quilt on days that you may have company. If you are asked by your romantic partner about the absence of sheets, you can simply say that you find the feel of the jacquard fabric to be sexy on your skin. Good luck finding an answer that works for you! Onward
