Mouse traps are inexpensive. They're gruesome, but inexpensive. Don't put out poison - the mouse eats it and then runs off. Neighborhood pets can catch the mouse before it dies and then they (cat/dog) are subject to poison and can/will die.

Easiest most humane way. Get a chaff bag of grain mix. The mouse will chew a hole to get into it, have it near the doorway. When you hear mouse in it, sneak up and grab bag and turf it out the door, shut door quickly, mouse will fly out of bag in fright and run away.
I know I just had one, and it turned into about fifty. It is not nice to kill animals in any shape of form, so I found this method quick, effective and the mice do the job for ya. I had ten at a time in there merrily munching away, I opened the door, quickly picked up the chaff bag and threw it out the door, shut the door and mice flew out of the holes they had made, away into the yard.
More effective than humane traps and certainly less stressful. It works a treat. You will hear the mouse chewing away in the bag. Just be quick. No need to kill the animal.

Just remember the mouse is more scared of you . A little empty 10 kg chaff bag does wonders. You do not even have to see the mouse that way. You don't have to harm him and it is done in a second flat. Mice stick around their food source. You can go to a produce store and get a free bag....just ask if they have any old grain mix u can take with it. Or ask at a racing stable, they will have some for free. I stumbled upon this method when I was thinkin how can I get rid of a hundred mice!!! I accidentally left a bag of race horse feed in the house and found ten holes chewed in it and I opened the door and threw it out and bingo, set ten mice free in an instant, without stress and it did not take long for them to get into the bag .

cool, kimmy, I may try that. I've had a mouse for 2m and have done nothing. I keep convincing my self it has gone away since I've been being cleaner and cleaner but then I see it again in the living room. I was horrified the first time and detemined to kill it, startled the second and amused the 3rd. now I have no intention of killing it unless it starts biting me in my sleep.

Mice are adorable! I don't want them living in my house, that's for sure, but to me they're every bit as cute as other furry mammals. Luckily, my cats have mouse control down pat, so I've never had to face the issue of whether to kill them or not -- I'm not sure I could do it.

OK, some of you might not like this first suggestion, but while I was in the Emergency Room for 4 hours waiting to see the doctor, I was chatting with a guy and his wife and another woman who all live out in the country. The second woman was saying she had a problem with pigeons and rats in her barn. The guy said the way to get rid of them was to set out Dr. Pepper in a shallow bowl and put it up in the rafters. The sugar attracts them and they'll drink it. But they can't pass gas and eventually the carbonation will kill them. There was a long pause....then I wondered aloud if Dr. Pepper could be the cause of my abdominal pain. Then we all just busted out laughing! When you've been in the ER for hours in pain, you'll find anything funny.
We were NOT laughing at the pigeons and rats, by way of disclaimer.
Anyway....One inexpensive way to keep mice out is to get some steel wool pads. Use them to plug up any place in the walls, corners of cabinets, or where you think the mice are coming in. The steel wool hurts their mouths if they try to bite through it. I had a mouse problem after I moved in my apartment and the steel wool has kept them out ever since.
