Last night I was exhausted, came home with tunnel vision to go to bed and rest. When I got up this morning all the hard work I'd done on Thursday was gone. Dozens of grocery sacks, dishes everywhere, trash here and there.
.........snip.........If they're playing with a game and I'm home when they're done with it they have no problem picking it up and putting away before they move on. I don't know how old your children are, but if they are 3 or older, they can be putting their things away no matter who's home. We teach our children these things so they will know how to live as independent, responsible adults. You can't train your DH, but you can teach your children that trash ALWAYS go in the trash can. Teach them to rinse their dishes and place in the dishwasher or in the sink when finished with them. If the kids balk and ask why they have to do it when Dad doesn't, remind them that you are raising them, not their Dad. But then you have to decide what to do about his dishes and trash. Perhaps tell the children their Dad may learn from their example. Then it's a win-win for everyone. No matter how you try to solve this problem, please let us know how things are going. After all, we learn from each other. Edited to enlarge quote for easier reading.
