I currently have two: one at gmail and one at yahoo. The gmail one uses my name, from when I was a commitee chair, and folks needed to contact me. (And also, that organization had trouble with yahoo accounts.)
The yahoo is a bit more anonymous, but I use that user name in forums and other places.
But lately, I am thinking of opening a new account, because I am requesting vacation brochures.
Do folks find it useful to have more than two personal accounts?

I find it very difficult to handle multiple email accounts. And keeping them separate is even more difficult, because once someone finds out, they tend to cc all kinds of people.
When we owned the restaurant I had an email account only for restaurant business. I had to check that email every day and only wanted it to be business related. At some point a couple of people discovered that they could contact me via that email address regarding personal non-business related issues. I was very annoyed when my husband cc'd 20 people on an email to me using that address about something completely unrelated and I started getting non business related emails. I had to contact all those folks to let them know that email was for business only and request they not use it for non restaurant related communication.
I am really glad not to have to juggle both those accounts anymore.

I have five.
One is my work, which uses my whole real name, employer, position, phone, etc. etc.
Second, I have a personal account I use with family & friends and for all my on-line banking & other financial stuff. I also usually use this for purchases from (trusted) online sources.
Third is one I use often for forum & other sign-ups.
A fourth is a total throwaway I use when I make an on-line inquiry about car insurance or any other topic I think will generate spam.
The last one is a single-purpose mail I use to review books on amazon, which I really don't do very often.
I have occasionally opened others for some random, one-off reason, but I've forgotten them & never check.
The first two are the only ones I check every day.

I understand, eagle.
Actually. I have been getting lax in my 'private' account. When friends would start sending me humorous e-mails, etc. I would threaten to banish them to my spam account. I have gotten lax about this. It seems that some people think that this is "communicating." These are old friends who live far away.
The real problem is that I have a number of retailers sending me offers. I enjoy taking advantage of these, but they sometimes overwhelm some of the other notices that I would like to read.

I have seven e-mail accounts. 1. My own personal e-mail account that I use for friends and many non-private things. 2. An e-mail account that I share with my husband and use for certain non-private things. 3. A "private" e-mail account that I use for forums, boards, and such, that doesn't use my name. 4. An e-mail account that I want to close, but two friends keep sending e-mail to it, despite my efforts to send them to another account. 5,6,7. I have three other e-mail accounts that I don't use and rarely check. In the past, I used one of them (5) to check to see if my bulk e-mails reached the intended recipients. The two other accounts I have just because I'm a member of certain groups. I could do without e-mail accounts 4, 6, and 7, but there are minor reasons why I keep them around and since I don't really have to bother with them, I kind of ignore them anyway. I don't find it difficult to keep up with my accounts because for most of them, I use Microsoft Outlook and I'm able to manage them there. The main challenge for me is to keep the accounts clutter free. It's easy to do that with some of them, but with others, I really have to keep on top of all of the new e-mail that comes in. That reminds me: I should take myself off of some e-mail lists, since I don't have as much time to read them as I used to. But back to your question... I think it's okay to have more than two accounts as long as you have specific purposes for them and you're able to manage them.

I have over a dozen because I use them for different things; I use a lot of forwarding and POP and my email program filters and slots things into appropriate folders so I don't find it hard keeping them organized... at least compared to the mess that comprises the rest of my computer. It's frustrating to me that when I give my primary 'real name' email address to new friends, I now find it necessary to say "Even if you know how to use bcc instead of cc to avoid giving my address to a bunch of strangers, please don't add me to a mailing list, send me chain letters or forward me urban legends about deodorant toxins or attach 50 "funny pics" which are older than the internet, without asking me first if I'm interested in that crap."

I don't know how you all manage so many accounts. I have one. If I had a business, I'd probably have two. Had others before but found it all too confusing. I'm very happy with one but I use Mail and have all sorts of smart mailboxes to save things for me so I can keep the rest regularly deleted. Which reminds me. Time to declutter that inbox again.

I currently have 3 but I think I might get a new one for overseas job searching - I am getting tons of spam - how do they figure out how to do that spam?

I currently have 3 but I think I might get a new one for overseas job searching - I am getting tons of spam - how do they figure out how to do that spam? They sell the lists to each other. Also there are so many scams and criminals on the net. Usually, I try to deal with companies that I trust, but right now, I just want to write for tourist information. For now, I am deliberately misspelling my name, so I will know that I am getting the spam from one of the travel websites. But of course, once the spam starts coming, it is too late. Besides, I like that account name very much, and I don't want to dump it. I have been givingout my cell phone number, because my carrier is so bad, that most calls get dropped anyway, and I might stop the service. But I should probably give out a fake phone number. In your case, the government might be selling your information. I got two things in the mail today, for moving into the location. Don't know why they think I moved. Maybe it is because I just got a radio license. At least one of the coupons is something useful, so I guess I won't complain yet. But I still get junk mail for a business name I registered long ago, and it expired years ago, but the junk mail keeps coming!

I only really have one that I use. I do have a second that comes automatically with my internet provider but I don't use it and rarely even bother to check it. I hate my current email address but have used it for a long time and don't want to lose my stored emails or miss emails from folks. I am wondering if there's a way to change the address but keep all the info. I guess I should email the tech folks there and find out! Anyway, I might set up a third just for use at places like this. I have to admit I get very nervous about being here because there are SO many anonymous "guests" and I would just hate to have my identity known, especially by someone who's just "rubber-necking".

I can only manage one. I do have 2 but that's because my internet provider gave us one. It came in handy with one site where they wouldn't take the yahoo one. I find it annoying that I get spam (on my primary email) but I check mine daily so I don't think I miss anything important. It gets backlogged with messages I need to delete.

I am no expert, but I think you are okay, as long as you make sure that your profile shows that your email address is hidden. The way I try to protect my anonymity is that I have a different user name at this board than at any other board. I also have an account with my internet provider, but I don't even count that, since I never intend to use it.

Thank you all for your input!
I am thinking that it would not be a bad idea for me to start a new, totally disposable account, for the purpose of requesting vacation literature. This will be my third (or my fourth, if I count the one from my ISP) It will allow me to click away with total abandon!
I will keep the two I have now, and I will try to be more diligent and ruthless about deleting things from these accounts.
