so I cleaned a lot yesterday and had done a few things earlier this week. It certainly wasn't bad considering my usual mess and festering squalor of a couple of years ago, but
a) took me a lot longer than I thought, like 4 solid hours (until I collapsed to bed) b)now is a bit more clean and "sterile" than I'm comfortable with. It looks bare. I will try to maintain it and get used to this. I've definitly improved with this gradually over 4 years or so, but obviously still need a lot of work adjusting to "normal" living. c)CLEAN with a capital C for me is still pretty cluttered/untidy compared to many. I just can't imagine not having Schtuff. d) cleaning something, like the floor, made others look dirtier, I tried to WASH my very ancient scratched and dirty leather couch but it needed hardier scubbing than I had energy for.
I have 3 friends who come over when its messy and I almost always invite the janitor in right away for repairs without cleaning. so I am not used to someone whose opinion I value, yet don't know how they will react coming over.
Its hard to say how an outside person will view it. I know its ok but I wish I could have a more precise way of seeing how others might see it.
brrr, I'm nervous! i don't care about the opinions of everyone, but this might be someone special.

Good for you puppybox! I hope your visitor and you hit it off and this is the beginning of a new chapter. Isn't it great to be able to have folks over? I have someone coming over in less than a couple of hours who's never been here before and I'm not as nervous as I thought I would be. My only hesitation is that Sadie does well with the visit. Let us know how the visit went and if there will be more. I'm rooting for ya gal! Hugs SNM

Hey, the clean stuff is clean, the remaining touches of "schtuff" make it look homey, and the not-readily-cleanable stuff is proclaiming its "vintage" status. It sounds like there's nothing there that would be of interest to the Board of Health; and your visitors have their choice of places to set their coats, their backsides, and their coffee cups. With that minimum achieved, most people won't really care about your stuff - because they're much more interested in *you.* Take a deep breath, pretend to be relaxed (it's sometimes a self-fulifilling pretense), and have fun. (PS. If your visitor happens to be a guy who does not share living quarters with a woman, your place probably looks better than his does. )

And if you dim the lights, your visitor won't be able to see as much! I highly recommend a dimmer switch or pink light bulbs!

well, it went really well. I have not quite enough lamps and no overhead light in the living room which created a good "dimmer" effect. evelyn, I think I may have really achieved the effect that you described. I think I saw how he saw it. which is "full" but fun vintage things were definitely screaming their vintageness and it was homey rather than cluttered. He said he had been anticipating a kitchen disaster when I had told him "I'm cleaning the kitchen becasue you are coming, but its uncleanable". (it is, in certain respects) but that it was nothing, he's seen much worse. then I forgot about the state of clean completely for long time... I did go to his house for a short visit and a) he is a guy that lives alone yet b) its super clean and uncluttered and c) even he thinks it looks too sterile as its painted white white white and he very little furniture and he wants some more decorations etc. stuff no more- i think there will be a lot more visits.
