Claude had more than hoarding issues going on - she was delusional (no one really thinks people broke in and messed that house up - especially when she said she hadn't been in that walk in closet since 1986 or something). Jim must've been one smooth and handsome man as a younger guy, and I totally think he's got another woman in Vegas....but now - either under the influence of a drug or mild dementia...the daughters should get their Mom into treatment/nursing home if they can, and get the parents divorced.

While Claudie certainly has her problems, Jim was certainly the smarmy, snorty, eyes gleeming, you-know-what every chance he got in this episode. What a piece of work. Bottom line is that he left, and she was entitled to spousal support as someone who did not work outside the home and who was in a long-term (defined as anything over 10 yrs.) marriage. I hope some attorney was watching and contacts her for pro bono assistance, and that she gets what she deserves in settlement as well. I know...I'm dreaming.

You have 12 kids - you get old and they leave - he looked like he had a girlfriend to me - just had that look in his eye. Maybe Claudie had problems because of him! The Bible does say a man is not to put aside his wife in her old age. I doubt Jim is working - retired - though Claudie can prob get ss based on his earnings as a divorced woman?

I have to agree with butterfly on this one... Who knows what came first...the squalor or the disfunctional relationship? Did anyone see the episode with the lady who had her children taken away and she just couldn't let go of the stuff...even to get them back? At the end of the program it said that her husband divorced her..

Yeah my sentiments precisely. .... 'you get old and they leave'...... If I heard right Claudie is 58. Later down the line when she's old enough to qualify she could get SS based on his. I guess for me when it comes down to it pushed my buttons more because my dad left my mom and my mom was in a bad financial situation even after the divorce settlement and what she had to go thru was so bad (my mom) so this kind of triggered my feelings on that. So, I wasn't able to sympathize with Jim. But at least I realize why. Edited to add: and in the case of my parents they BOTH had serious issues ........ it wasn't good girl bad boy........it was they both had serious deal breaking issues...................and I still didn't like how mom had to suffer more........

...seeing him laugh and refuse to make any commitment or compromise got to me... I felt he laughed, not because he was happy or saw humor in the situation, but because he was very uncomfortable and nervous. I do that myself sometimes and it's unconscious on my part. I guess we all see things through the filter of our own lives and that's why I see his laughter this way and others see it differently. I do think Claudie is entitled to part of whatever income he may have. I missed the first 4 or so minutes of the show so perhaps they talked about that then? I just didn't hear any discussion of what his finances were so I can't speculate on that part but only on what I saw.

Any marriage over 10 yrs would give her access to his SS. But I don't believe the divorce was ever granted, so that wouldn't happen. And she's entitled to spousal support now.

Thank you for posting that link MellowYellow! I thought the article was interesting and illuminated more about Jim's personality:
"...Garner is diagnosed with slight dementia..."
"...He has a lot of friends. Everyone loves him. He's the guy who's willing to help anyone out. Need your car started? Need help fixing a roof? He's there. He's the first one out there helping..."
I think Jim deserves the benefit of the doubt in any opinions we may form of him based on a 60 minute television show.

I got the sneaky impression that the daughter who lived in Vegas was somehow supporting Dad.....and knew more than she was saying about the situation and him.

With "slight dementia," people often retain their social skills, which Jim obviously possesses in abundance. I suspect he has a girlfriend, too--otherwise he wouldn't have been so evasive.
My grandma, a hoarder, passed away at nearly 99 years old. I didn't realize that she had a slight dementia until my sister convinced me. I lived in the same building as Mom and Grandma, so I didn't notice the gradual loss of her short-term memory. She retained all of her natural charm right up until the end--when she broke her hip, she kept insisting that she wouldn't go to the hospital, until the handsome fireman walked in!

TeeHee, howardsgirlfriend-- it sounds like your grandma had her priorities straight! 99 years old and still a twinkle in her eye for the cute fireman! God rest her dear soul.
