We, the admins, would like to emphasize to our members that this is a support group and we use discussion to work out issues and find solutions. Not everyone will agree with our personal judgments. As long we are respectful of other opinions and exercise common courtesy, disagreement is perfectly fine. "Take what you need and leave the rest" is applicable in chat too. We acknowledge chat "works" most of the time and many issues are handled at the time of the problems by the chatters themselves. Likewise, issues are sometimes brought to mods privately and are resolved behind the scenes before they intrude on anyone else. However we must make provisions for people who (repeatedly) break our rules. Denying actual abuses take place and allowing them to continue is the first definition of enabling. The disciplinary procedure for chat infractions has been added to Community Information section in Chat Information so we all know ahead of time what infractions may cost us. We need to reiterate that judging behavior without a reliable method of checking what was actually said doesn't work and is unfair to participants. People's memories of conversations are often influenced by emotion. Moderators need transcripts to see how an event unfolded and objectively observe what was actually said. To that end, mods will keep transcripts (without looking at them) for a short period of time to be determined. They will routinely destroy them if they are not needed within that time period. No one will read the transcripts unless disciplinary action regarding a particular issue is being contemplated. No one will read it to glean personal information regarding other members as this was given in confidence to those present. Additional information was added to the footer on the Chat entrance page, along with a link to Chat Information in the Community Information section of the forums.

To go into further detail and explicit specifics would be unkind toward the chatters who were present during any specific incident, therefore we are unwilling to provide such specifics at this time. Suffice it to say that action was necessary and we were obligated to our members to do our utmost to provide a safe place to chat.
