FYI you can check to see where your refund is from the federalese by going to WWW.irs.gov and clicking where is my refund. It will tell you when your refund should arrive either into your bank or in the mail. I got mad because they said I would get mine on a Friday and it got there on Monday by direct deposit. I was mad it was late. I need every little dime of money TODAY! hugs btt

I got mine mailed to - yeah and hip hip hoorah! I do need to get stamps at the PO though - and I was planning on doing that tomorrow - I bet it will be busy however - so I got to think on that one. I called some stores to get stamps and they only sale the whole books - I just don't think I need that many stamps - first of all it is expensive and I don't actually mail that many letters - and I run the risk of losing the book too.

Checked the site - people can still file an extension.
You have to wait 3 to 4 weeks to find your info online if you snail mailed.
You have to wait about 72 hours if you emailed it - did it online.
My state one was 6!!! double sided pages - took 2 stamps!

Here it is 7:00 p.m. on the 15th. I finally found my 2009 info. I'm going in the bedroom to work on it now. Think I will go to H&R Block online. Is there a free way to file online?

All I can say is, I got my Extension Form in on time! I expect a refund-I always get money back. So I'll wait a few days and file on-line. No way will I take until October 15. I plan to habe it all done by May 15 at the latest.

Congrats to all who got their taxes done or an extension done. I was going to get an extension online, but it asks for last year's AGI and last year's PIN, etc. Soooooo. Since I haven't done last year's, I'm not going to get an extension. I did my 2005 taxes in 2007, and there was no penalty because I got refunds from both Fed and State. I will finish '06, '07, '08, and '09 tomorrow when I can see. My eyes are crossing and I'm ready for bed. Too much stress. It's all my fault. I have no one to blame. I ran the numbers and things look pretty good. The State will owe me about $7.00 if I didn't make any errors.

How can you wait so many years Saffron?
Okay PO was slightly busy. But library was more so - people asking the librarians for help - it isn't something they can do. I know aarp has had classes for weeks about it for free there.
DD and sil was tricky they say - 2 states - bought a house - student loans and all that stuff - quess it was complicated.

Saffron, don't feel bad. I let my taxes go for several years more than once. The first time I didn't deal with several years worth, but got them all done at once (about 5 years worth) and was in so much fear over the consequences. I kept getting notices from the IRS that I wouldn't open for fear. When I finally did file I got money back for all the years from state & feds. Perhaps beccause that turned out well, may have contributed to the fact that I let it happen again, not filing for 2 or 3 years at a time. When we needed a loan to buy a house, I was forced to file the tax returns because the lender needed a copy of our most recent tax return. That time turned out pretty good, too. Then, lo and behold, I let it happen one more time. This one didn't turn out so well, as I owed money and had to pay penalties.
I hope you don't do what I did and let it slip again. It's a constant worry in the back of the mind, never letting you rest completely. And sooner or later you might end up owing money like I did and have to pay a penalty. But it's the peace of mind that is more important than the money. Staying on top of the taxes, doing them each year, and getting them done on time, or even early has made a huge difference for me regarding peace of mind.
Success19, I have taxes in 2 states also. But I use an accountant, don't do it myself. He's great, handles it all, calls with reminders, all that great stuff. Well worth it to have this guy on my side.

How can you wait so many years...? If you don't owe any money to Feds or State you can just file an extension w/your estimate of what they owe you and that gives you until October 15th of the year it is due to file. If you don't file, no problem, as long as you file 3 years from the date of your extension there is no paperwork penalty and you will get your refund back. Sometimes they'll send you a letter that they will figure your taxes out...then you need to do it quickly or they will shortchange you on your refund. I've done this quite a few times since the 80's. Last time I got a refund of 3,300 for 3 years, which gave me the moolah to get some much needed furniture. Well done on all who got their taxes done or extensions! P.S. Thanks Messymimi...you are always sooooooo correct!

Success19, I didn't exactly "wait" It was more like I was frozen in a depression/squalor/depression/squalor cycle, didn't let anyone come in my house for three years, my papers were everywhere, things got worse, went to and from work, didn't deal with things at home. One year led to the next, and pretty soon it was October 2009 when I had a pipe break in my house, and I was forced to ask for help. It was painful, but it's the best thing that has happened to me for years. I've been forced to deal with a lot of things. And now I'm vowing never to let things get this bad again. So, the flood was a huge blessing in disguise. I'll be mailing the taxes on Monday, and I've already started a file for 2010 taxes. I'll be on top of things when the next tax time rolls around.
