our noses associate odours ,
For instance my partner would swear he could smell poop if a tub of cheap baby wipes were opened in his vicinity even if they had been used to wipe hands only or indeed had never been used.
The other day he came in and started complaining that the kitchen reeked like cat pee and that the smell had hit him as soon as he came in,I was annoyed as I had mopped the floor and changed and washed the small litter tray in there, went in and sniffed could only smell the floral disinfectant I've used off and on over the years but honestly wasn't sure because noses are often keener when coming in to the home from outside, the following day he could only smell the disinfectant.
Me well the smell of whiskey or Pernod will have me looking for vomit.
Does anyone else find that odours become confused, and are we sometimes so convinced that our houses smell bad we are trying to deodorize ghost smells?
Or could cleaning with well known cleaning products be a bad idea since a familiar perfume may be associated with a past mess/smell so strongly that our brains smell ack instead of aaah

Hi Bigrae! I seem to suffer the opposite problem - I think my house smells fine but if anyone comes over I will invariably get a comment such as - how on earth can you live here with it smelling like cat wee - have you let your wet smelly dogs lie on the lounge again, it stinks!! - OMG what is that stench coming from the kitchen? I think just as I have become immune to the mess and clutter so too has my nose given up and has become immune to nasty smells! So now I keep an oil burner going all the time but I keep going out without blowing the candle out and I'm worried I'll burn the house down! There is always some dilemma or another in my house ! . I love the smell of baby powder (assoc with Grandmother), pine sol and Murphy's oil soap. Also enjoy the smell of coffee and don't care for the taste. But, carnations always remind me of funerals.

I remember going to the hospital when my Grandmother was dying of cancer, she looked awful and was so thin, I hated the visit. We went home and Mom made fried chicken breaded with cornflakes. I couldn't eat it because I didn't like the smell. I haven't been able to eat fried chicken since then. The smell.

My husband is like that about any kind of food-scented candles. His ex was an animal hoarder and used to burn those candles all the time to cover up the scent, so now he has PTSD flashbacks and I can't buy/spray anything except cinnamon-scented stuff.
I miss my Yankee Candles!!!
