My apologies on the delay of starting this month's new quote topic. I am returning from a business trip and have one more flight before I finally make it home. Thank you, Lioness, for picking up the slack as I negotiate the wide world of air travel.

"When we focus on what we can do instead of what we can't, a world of possibility opens to us."--Gail Lynne Goodwin
In a world where most of us are multitasking from the minute we get up until the minute we go to bed, it feels close to impossible to focus on just one thing for any length of time. However, if we look at people who are successful in various ways--athletes, artists, business people, musicians, etc.--we see that what usually propelled them from average to excellent was their ability to focus all their energy on the pursuit of that excellence.
Okay, I'm not suggesting anyone should set themselves up to be a gold medalist in good housekeeping (unless you really want to ), but learning to concentrate and focus on one task at a time can actually bring us closer to getting our homes clean and clutter-free much faster than trying to do twenty different things at once. So this month's quotes are dedicated to being mindful of the task at hand, whether it's washing the dishes, the clothes, the windows, or the dog, and moving closer to the homes we want, one focused step at a time.
"Most people have no idea of the giant capacity we can immediately command when we focus all of our resources on mastering a single area of our lives."--Tony Robbins
"Always remember, your focus determines your reality."--George Lucas
"When you stay focused and keep a commitment, you create momentum, and momentum creates momentum."--Rich Fettke
"If you focus on results, you will never change. If you focus on change, you will get results."--Jack Dixon

"Focus is the key to accomplish what is necessary--easy word to spell, it contains only five letters but it is probably one of the most powerful words there are in order to move forward with confidence and with the expected results."--Byron Pulsifer, Stop and Focus
"I don’t care how much power, brilliance or energy you have, if you don’t harness it and focus it on a specific target and hold it there, you’re never going to accomplish as much as your ability warrants."--Zig Ziglar
"Throughout my career, I have discovered and rediscovered a simple truth. It is this: The ability to concentrate single-mindedly on your most important task, to do it well and to finish it completely, is the key to great success, achievement, respect, status and happiness in life."--Brian Tracy

I looked for a quote on focus....but then I saw a squirrel! I was planning to write exactly that, seriously I was going to really post that in fun -- in almost those exact words. -- but then got distracted and forgot! Really I did get distracted.

OK, as might be expected, this month's topic is a HUGE favorite ;-) The following is from Leo Babuta of zen habits. It's actually on why NOT multi-task which I consider in the same realm as focus.
First, a few quick reasons not to multi-task:
Multi-tasking is less efficient, due to the need to switch gears for each new task, and the switch back again. Multi-tasking is more complicated, and thus more prone to stress and errors. Multi-tasking can be crazy, and in this already chaotic world, we need to reign in the terror and find a little oasis of sanity and calm. Leo Babuta

toomuchstuph, while multitasking works for me at work, at home it's only resulted in multi-unfinished projects, multi-unwashed dishes and clothes, multi-boxes...you get the idea. So I'm now doing my best to concentrate on finishing one task at a time, not trying to work on--and not finishing--ten different jobs at once. So here are a few more anti-multitasking quotes..."The man who chases two rabbits, catches neither."--Confucius
"The shorter way to do many things is to do only one thing at a time."--Mozart
"Einstein didn't invent the theory of relativity while he was multitasking at the Swiss patent office."--David Meyer, a cognitive scientist at the University of Michigan, quoted by Winifred Gallagher, Rapt: Attention and the Focused LifeDi and Lioness, watch out for those squirrels--they get me in trouble during business meetings all the time.

Around here, it's not the squirrels, it's the hungry kitten sinking its claws into your leg while mewing as loud as it can to get you to go fix a bottle!
