Dh has been off work since March (not good )but recently he has begun massive decluttering of the garage and shed which were the last bastions of squalor. We discovered a metal recycling place just over the state line that pays us to dispose of a variety of things (car batteries, small motors, etc.) so this week so far he has disposed about 800 pounds. He's off making another trip now so we'll see how many more pounds to add to that. And after that we still have one more to go. In addition, we made two trips to the dump and have a few more to go. Interestingly, in our state we would have to pay for some of the things that we are getting money for by going out of state. I guess one of the benefits of living so close to a state boarder. Now, the garage is messy and unorganized, still has too many things in there BUT I don't think it fits into the categories of squalor anymore. It was the last part of the house that we couldn't walk into or use. Now, to start some massive renovation and for one of us to get back to work -- we've been applying like crazy.

Oh wow! 800 pounds?! What an achievement! How inspiring that he's taking a bad situation, being out of work, and using it to good purpose. Actually great purpose! Please tell him he's welcome to come out to my garage if he gets bored after he's done ( ) Keep up the good work and good luck on those job applications! notc

Fantastic! Decluttering, recycling, and getting cash for your scrap metal. Good man, that. Good luck with your job applications! Thanks everyone. We also got another 300 pounds today with expectations that we'll need another trip or two to get the rest of it out. Dh has had hoarding issues for a long while and along with ADHD it has been a struggle to get him to get rid of this stuff. So, I think so far we've hit the 1/2 ton (1,000 pounds) mark for the amount of metal/motors and car batteries we've gotten rid of. Wow!! that's a lot .
