I have just reached my second biggest goal in relation to overcoming my financial squalor and repairing my credit.
*drum roll please*
I JUST GOT MY FIRST PRIME CREDIT CARD IN 10 YEARS!!!
I am no longer considered a sub-prime risk! *woohoo*
And I got approved for way more than I expected... $8K!!! I know, I know.... DON'T USE IT!!!
I do not plan to use much of it. It serves 3 purposes:
1) The more balance you have available, the higher your score goes (mine went up by 30 points just for having this card available!). 2) It gives me peace of mind to know that I can pay for pretty much any household emergency with a limit like this, if all other contingencies fail. My squalor was made worse at times by needing repairs I couldn't afford, and then putting them off made it even worse. 3) It just makes me feel good to know I did it! All my work has finally paid off! It's like the thesis after finishing grad school!

Wow suedonym, I'm impressed!!! (I'm in the process of repairing credit too, but I'm too scared to actually FIND OUT what my credit IS!!! I've been paying stuff off, but I know I need to face the music and check out my credit reports & rating.) What's the biggest thing you did to get out of financial trouble? Congratulations! Carrie

CarrieI completely owe my success to the vast knowledge of the folks at the CreditInfoCenter forums. All the info you need to improve your credit is there and on the main website for free, but the site owner has also compiled it into a book as well. It was very overwhelming at first. They use a lot of acronyms, etc. But if you just lurk, read, and research a while, it starts to make sense. The things that helped me the most were leaning how to dispute items on my report and get the bureaus to remove them, and learning how to write a pay for delete letter, where you agree to pay off a collection account (for a lower amount) but get it in writing that they will remove the negative report from your report in exchange for payment. I also found out what creditors were more likely to give new credit to people with bad credit, so I could start building some positive trade lines.
