Sunday night, so far so good.
I figured I had a maximum of $55 I could spend at the grocery store (groceries and $10 for dog food).
I'm not good at a) shopping for groceries, b) being aware of a budget, and c) staying within that budget.
I shopped carefully, putting things back a couple of times.
I lucked out that those "Budget Gourmet" frozen entrees were on sale 10 for $10! So that's what I'll be having for lunches and dinners this week.
Anyway, I really tried to stay within that budget. When I checked out it came to $51.28! I know that may sound like a lot for 5 days, based on some of your (by the way, helpful and creative) responses, but I was quite proud of myself. Plus I got stuff I'll actually eat -- not things that would require "a complete personality change."
The recipe someone suggested of vegetables, brown rice, and a little ground beef reminds me of a college-era meal I and my roomates made that we called "Hippie Vegetables."
Anyway, I have plenty of food, and gas in my car, and enough quarters for two loads of laundry, and I'm left with a single dollar bill and some change. But actually that's good for me. There's something to be said for having spent it all wisely and having no "wiggle room.
Thanks for everything, everyone! You're all so great.
Laura

Yipeeee!!!! You are doing fantastic!!! I'm sure you'll be fine until more $$$ comes in. Have you thought about what you're going to do to manage the $$$ when it does come in? Any plans? Thinking about it before you have it in hand is helpful. Less likely to go out and blow it if you have a budget already set up. Good luck!! Carrie

Laura you did great. I still remember the first time I grocery shopped with cash -- it was so different than using a check or debit card. I totally did better with cash. It sounds like you're going to eat good and get through your week just fine.
