Hi all, I seem to have some sort of mites living under my desk at work. They're too small to see, but I can feel them (thankfully they never make it past my ankles).
I don't know what they are, but I don't think that they're 'chiggers' because they don't leave big ugly bitemarks.
I just vacuumed the area that they're in, and that has helped a lot, but I'd like to find a way to get rid of all of them. Does anyone know of a spray or powder that would do the trick?
I'm worried that some of these mites are going to hitchhike home on my feet, and spread to my apt., or spread more here at work.

They sound like fleas. Has anyone brought an animal into work? If so there are effective sprays.

They're not fleas. I've had problems with them in the past with a couple of my dogs, and I'm very familiar with them. These mites are too small to see, and its easy to spot a flea if you know what you're looking for.
Actually my dog does come to work with me, but he's too big to fit under my desk. Whatever these are, they seem to be leaving him alone, because he hasn't been scratching any.

How about a good sprinkle of pepper, cinnamon and salt? Or one of the three?

diatomaceous earth.
and also -- but it requires repeat applications -- spray with a solution of citra-solv. (pure orange cleanser)
my friend says they're called acharia -- clearly I don't know how to spell that.

I think it's fleas, also, just in a 'no see em' larvae stage, right after they've hatched out. They're kinda translucent, so you can't see them. I've had trouble with them at my house, too. I just bought some flea and tick insecticide at the dollar store and have been spraying it every day or so in the area i notice them (underneath my desk being one of the prime locations here, too) and it seems to be doing the trick. My cats have been evicted to the outdoors for the duration of warm weather, so there's no host other than us for them to go after. Fivecat

Thanks all, for all the advice.
I doubt if its fleas, because my dog never lays in the area they're in, and his bed doesn't have any of these li'l critters (whatever they are). But they're impossible to see, so I can't say for sure.
Thanks again to all who replied.

Just a thought.....it works for fleas but I don't know if it works for mites....
I am assuming you have carpet under your desk? If so, try sprinkling regular table salt into the carpet then leave it for awhile. You can then vacuum up the area at the end of the day.
I read this tip a long time ago. I would assume it would work for mites. It said something about dehydrating the fleas and they die.
