I don't know if this would work for everyone, but it did for me today. I talked to my best friend this morning. We've both been having health "challenges" lately and she just recently moved to another apartment, so we talked about what needed to be done around the house.
Now this was the friend I wanted to visit this summer with the stimulus check that I didn't qualify for.
After we said our goodbyes (we talked for an hour, thank goodness for unlimited long distance! ), I sat there for a moment and thought, "Now would I need to get done today if my best friend in the whole world planned to visit me in the future? No pressure -- I have plenty of time to get everything ready before she comes...." I formulated a plan and worked for the next two hours (with 15 minute rest breaks every 30 minutes) and actually got a good chunk of stuff done in "The Bedroom Of Doom" (the room of the day). The thought of my friend coming to visit gave me something to look forward to, which right now after being sick so much lately, is what I really need. Then as a reward, I started planning out what we would do if she came to my city (that's inexpensive and fun at the same time!). I know it's not the same as my friend actually walking through the front door, but it gave me HOPE.
Somebody please tell me I haven't totally lost it.

I think it's a wonderful idea! It's far better to focus on the positive- what you want it to be like, rather than dwell on what you don't want and the misery it is causing you. Thoughts become things... what you focus on you get. So, if we constantly focus on the mess/clutter we tend to attract more of it, or at least less of our ability to deal with it into our lives... while if we instead focus on what our ultimate goal is and how our surroundings need to be to fit that, we can get more motivated and attract what we want and focus on. So... your goal is a great focus... keep thinking about it several times a day and as you look at your house, focus on what each area would look like to fit that ultimate goal... then (as Captain Picard on the USS Enterprise would say- my son is watching this now ) "Make it so!"

Dear Rennie Ellen, If you have lost it, I want to be locked up in your ward . This sounds like a wonderful motivator, and I'm going to use it. messymimi

Good thought Rennie!! You could also think of someone - famous or not - who you particularly like or admire, and pretend they will be coming to stay with you overnight. This is fun!

What a wonderful idea! I think I will try this thinking of my family coming. No one from my family in Vermont has been here since 1992 but I often wish they would come - I've had to do all the traveling to them and to my son. It will be fun to prepare the house as if they were coming! And in this world of miracles -- who knows -- maybe someday they will.
