The landlord was due to come this morning between 8.00 and midday to check the fire alarms. Usually what happens is that a man comes from the alarm company and one of the landlord's workers comes with him. While the alarms are checked the landlord's worker has a look around as an informal inspection. It might be better if it were a formal one as the consequences are the same.
Now in maintenance, but not perfect, I find these visits stressful. I could not get to sleep last night and woke early this morning. My place is tidy and I had to remind myself that clothes drying were not a mess but a reasonable way of using my rooms.
No one came! I phoned the landlord's office who said that the alarm engineer had told them when he was coming and they had told us. I pointed out I had stayed in to wait for them and would prefer definite appointments. I then asked for some work to be done. I've been unhappy doing this in the past as I felt uncomfortable with workers coming in. I still don't like it but there are some thiings I just can't fix myself.
Finally I've got rid of a few more bits. There is very little and it is not in the way but I still want rid of things that I am not using or going to use. So I've got rid of some new floppy disks and old light bulbs which I will never use, and also two big plastic boxes which I used to store stuff and without the stuff the boxes looked like they wanted to be filled again and I didn't want to fill them.
Currently things I need to use up or get rid of are, a few cans of food which I overordered, some stationery which I might use up, an old African stool of no value and badly repaired which I have been meaning to repair since umm... 1960something.
Thanks for being here friends. I couldn't have done this without you and I need support to keep going.

Well done, Rory! I know what you mean about empty storage containers looking like they want to be filled again. Better to get them out of your living space altogether. I hope your landlord can give you a specific appointment for your fire alarm inspection/repair work. I'd have problems with someone coming in while I'm not here, too.

Hello Rory
What a pain! Having disturbed sleep and awake early and they didn't even turn up. I hope they made a new appointment and show up next time.
You're right, drying laundry isn't mess.
It's good to hear that you are in maintenance. I love hearing people here say that; it gives those of us who aren't yet there, hope. Well done on requesting work to be done. I need to request repair work too, but not ready yet. Won't be long though, I hope. I like what you said about about getting rid of things that you're not using, or going to use. That is a wise, not to mention practical, way of thinking and I know its what many of us aspire to.
Like you, I couldn't have done what I've managed to do so far, without the support of SOS and the fantastic people that I've met here.

You're doing great Rory! Isn't it wonderful to be in maintenance? I almost feel as though my life began the day my maintenance started. I know I'll never go back to how it was for those few years and I'm so proud of all who are in maintenance or are seriously fighting to get there. Nothing irritates me more than people who don't keep their appointments and disregard the fact that your time is just as important as theirs is. I do hope you're able to get your repairs done soon so you can continue to enjoy your reclaimed space. SNM

Urgh. I bet I'm not the only one...
I can't believe I felt this... When you mentioned the old African stool... I pondered, hmmmm I wonder if I could have fixed it. African stools are cool. Hmmm.. I wonder if it was really in bad shape, or if that's just an exaggeration. I think it would probably be really cool. Hmm, it's too bad it's gone. Hmmmm..
etc.etc.etc.etc.
How ridiculous. I don't even know you, and I'm already pondering what I would have done to ensure that I could have rescued your african stool if it were mine!

Rory, your statement about empty containers just being a temptation resonates so much with me. I have some shelving in the living room (mostly for books) that is currently NOT jam packed. Every so often, I think, gee, I have extra room there; what if.....?
Same with any kind of drawer or cabinet that's not yet full of stuff. It's just NUTTY that I somehow feel they need to be filled. It's almost like permission to buy new stuff I don't need because, you know, I have room for it.
Good for you for getting rid of the containers.
