I have bad dreams and night terrors. All my life. Recently MUCH exacerbated by fibromyalgia medication [elavil generic]. The doctor says, "well, it can lead to colourful dreams". COLOURFUL? How about BLACK as sin and RED as hell and GREY as despair......I usually wake up from them SCREAMING. My Poor Dear Hubby: I scare him half to death...........
Anyway, I have had to stop this this specific drug, and start on another related [generic nortriptilene]. Far fewer side effects. No screaming now for almost a week!
I decided during the recent purge-a-thon that I should get rid of any of my books which cause fright: especially my small collection of very good ghost stories: Dickens, LeFanu, MRJames, plus victorian anthology. My subconscious doesn't need any more terror stimulation....
This morning while coping with more 'evidence of rodent activity' I decided to take some action. I put about a dozen books out at the curb, on top of a good green contractor bag.
They were gone [with bag] in less than 30 minutes! Nice Friday morning here, almost no walkers or cars. BUT........someone went by and took my great collection of terrifically scary stuff. HURRAH
I have NEVER been disappointed when I put stuff out with signs marked 'free'. Even the most unlikely material has gone, including wrecked-up-bbq. xxoo from Script

'Free' is a wonderful word that seems to make many things attractive. I've got rid of a load of stuff that way including some very 'good' stuff.
Also I am trying to read and look at stuff that is peaceful and quiet. I avoid programmes on disputes as they feed into my unsettled soul.
Getting rid of scary books seems a very caring and sound idea.

"Curb alert" ads on craigslist advertising stuff for free is how I've done it in pretty quick fashion. I don't think I've ever had anything last more than 15 minutes! Plus, no packing and driving and wrangling stuff to the recycling center or goodwill. The curb is my new best friend.
Good for you for getting rid of the books. We CAN do it!

Wish I had found your bag of books, Script! I love ghost stories, especially by such great authors.
Your post reminded me of something I had forgotten about. The gf I had for 11 years (who passed away shortly before I joined this site) was on a lot of medication, and at one point she had some of her medication changed, and she started having bad nightmares. She would often wake up in a horrible panic. After a month or so, the doctor changed her medication again, and her nightmares went away.
I need to do a book purge in a big way. I have a bunch of old auction catalogs that are taking up a lot of space. Theoretically, they are worth money, I see people putting them on ebay for some considerable prices...but it doesn't look like anyone is buying them! So I think that mine may be getting donated to the thrift store soon. I'd love to get some money for them, but I think I'd rather just have a big chunk of empty bookshelf space sooner than later.

We have people around here who partially make their living by scavenging. They drive through neighborhoods the evening before trash day and take anything usable, and take all of the scrap metal we would otherwise not be able to recycle.
I'm glad you got rid of your books that way, Script. That person will probably love those books.
Funny true story -- a guy decided to replace the fridge for his wife, as it was an old model. It still worked, though, so he didn't want to just trash it, and someone told him to put it out on the curb with a sign that said "Still works, Free" on it. He did, and nothing happened. The next morning, the person told him to change the sign to read $50. He did, and it was stolen within half an hour!

Yay for you dear Script! Getting rid of the books that way was a great idea. I am really glad you are finding a better medicine. I can't imagine having bad dreams that often.

Congrats on getting rid of those scary books. I've done great listing things as Curb Alerts on Craigslist. Furniture disapperars within hours. My husband recently started on Lexapro and he thinks its giving him nightmares. I'll mention your post to him.

Good for you! I always feel bad about leaving things out saying free - I'm worried that I may be contributing to someone else's squalor.

i think I have that victorian anthology! mine is called 4 victorian ghost "novels" but they are more like novellas. I wish I'd been there to get your stash.
welll you've inspired me to do same with books I couldn't sell. would be so easy to put back on shelves, but would then have double rows of books again- not allowed.

I have double rows of books and books in boxes, and books in suitcases. I do however read them all about once a year. I read too fast so I tend to re-read my old books because it is cheaper than going out and buying one a day.

This is awesome and a big step-- would it help if you read happy or funny books to re-direct your dreams?? I took elavil for fibro too but never had the dreams other than general-- but I noticed if I am careless with tv shows or books before bed I do have nightmares-- it seems our minds do not let go of what we put into them quickly ---happy dreams to you and hugs from Meme

Great to hear you are doing better! Stuff doesn't stay long on our curb here either. The neighbors pick it all up before the county can.
