An important distinction, don't you agree? I WANT to do more so the house will be cleaner. If I need to, I bet demand resistance will set in. So I don't need to. I want to.
I just did a drainer full of dishes. There aren't many more to do, so when these dry I WANT to go finish those last few.
Right now I WANT to clear up this living room floor. It's bothering me a lot, so I want to fix that.
And now I'm off to do whatever the heck I want to do.

Yep. You're not obligated, you don't have to and no one can make you do it.
You choose to do it.
Seems like a subtle difference to some, but it's huge for the rest of us.

Demand resistance is my M.O. also. I'm not a perfectionist, it's just the inner brat saying, "No! I don't have to! You (me!) can't make me!"
I'm trying to think in terms of "wants" also, but then I just fight between wanting to have a cleaner house and wanting to be ***!

Isn't it amazing how the use of one little word changes our entire attitude! I agree with the use of want instead of have. Great idea, and one I will use! Thanks for that MiSC.

Absolutely. Use "want" or "would like to do". In truth, you COULD just let it all go, but you wouldn't be happy. So MiSC, if you chose to do some work on the house, it will make you happier.

If you feel disingenuous saying "want to" you could "choose to" do the dishes "because it will help me get to where I want to go". I've been trying this lately and it seems to work better for me.

I tired 'want' but often found I was not speaking the truth. For me 'choose' works. The idea
"because it will help me get to where I want to go"
is so helpfull for me
