Hi everyone! I recently made an introduction post takeonestepatatime.proboards80.com/index.cgi?board=intro&action=display&thread=1164 and let a lot out. And apparently I'm feeling better! I just took a few minutes to take out the garbage bags that I'd filled around the house the past few weeks (7-8 of them) and just filled up a couple more to take out to the garage (I can put them out on the curb after dark since tomorrow's garbage day). I thought about how I've been wanting media shelves for like ever (I have a rather large DVD collection but they're all stored away in boxes or scattered about). So it crossed my mind. . . the corner bedroom isn't all that bad, mostly some things on the floor. . . so what if I cleared that out today to make room for the shelves I've had my eyes on at the store? I just emailed my boyfriend and asked him how we're doing with money, and asked for a deal. . . could I get my shelves if I cleared a spot for them? He said yes. It'll feel like an accomplishment to have *something* organized nice and neat, plus it will be so nice to finally be able to find the movie I'm in the mood to watch without having to dig through everything and get discouraged. I'm feeling pretty good about starting this. I have a long way to go overall but starting always seems to be the hardest part, don't you think? I've also cleaned up more around our computer desks and plan on getting to a few other areas (and surprising my boyfriend with the progress when he gets home). I'm so glad I found this place guys, I've been reading quite a bit and don't feel so alone. Thanks guys!!!

Hey shy-Starting is the hardest part for me, I know that! Doesn't it feel good after you do get started and even get the smallest thing done?
Great plan!! Enjoy your newly organized DVD collection. We are big movie watchers, too, but we mostly rent. I have a bunch of VHS children's movies I need to weed through soon. Tough to let them go, but I know we won't be watching them and by the time I have grandkids (yes, I think that far in advance when trying to get rid of some things) there may not be a VCR in existence!!
This is a great group of people, isn't it?

Thanks annieokie! I'm giving myself a little break to have lunch and browse around, . Started some laundry and got several more bags of garbage "gathered" up and taken out to the garage. I still need to attack the corner bedroom to make room for those shelves but I've probably got a good 5-6 hours before the BF gets home. I left all but a stack of my VHS's behind when I moved out west last year, most of which were recorded off TV, was really hard to let some of them go, even if I'd upgraded some of the same movies to DVD. And I can't watch the stack I did hang on to cuz we don't have a VCR yet, (I left that behind too). We've been planning on picking up one of those combo units when we find a good price. I'm kinda weird, I'm in my early 30's but I love animated movies, especially Disney. . . but at one point in my life I actually hoped to work for them. I've always loved to draw and cartoons always tied into that; maybe I'll post some of my art here sometime? It's just a hobby for now, but also a much needed outlet. I actually used to write reviews for a website focused on Disney DVD's and the company sent me review copies to keep (for free!) before the titles even hit the stores. I didn't have to review everything they sent (I focused on the *big* movies such as Bambi, Lion King and the like) so I've actually got quite a few I haven't even opened yet but I'm unable to part with them (also explains why my collection got so huge in such a short time). I figure the little kiddy titles I'm not really interested will come in handy if I ever have kids. Er. . . there's a case of me hoarding a bit, but I feel sorta entitled after all the things I had to let go of last year in the move. But yeah, lots of great people here. . . I'm thankful I've found you guys to relate to.

Oh good Lord girl!! Do not get me started on Disney!! My boys and I were able to make our first visit to Disney World this June (with lots of help from my boyfriend) and I am still on cloud nine! We had the most awesome time. I would love to see some of your artwork sometime!! My twelve-year-old son is an aspiring comic book artist and I love to see the things he comes up with. Keep up the good work. Can't wait to get home so I can get some of my "to-do's" done. Isn't it funny how finding a place like this can inspire me when nothing else would? Amazing....!

Hi, shy. Glad you are getting things done. Is this the day to make connections? I have a sneaking sympathy with you on the Disney movies. Before they were putting the older ones on video, I once stood in line for 2 hours, twice back to back, in the rain, to see Cinderella -- when I was in college! messymimi

My boyfriend took me to Disneyland for my birthday this year! I'm still in disbelief that I actually live within driving distance of it now, . I was still getting over my migraines on that last trip so I'm hoping I can enjoy it all the more the next time we can make it. I think I've managed to get 14 or so bags of garbage out into the garage today, with a couple more still on the way! I'm not sure if I can add much more and still have a place for my boyfriend to park, . But bleh. . . still got a long way to go, including the room for the shelves (but at least I got most of the garbage out of there). There are tons of little metal things on the floor from a toolbox tipping over. And I'll have to find a place to put the larger things. . . maybe I can find some boxes or something? But the living room, hallway, and master bedroom. . . they all still need work but look so much better since I committed myself today. I'm still a bit intimidated at the thought of the kitchen, but I'll get to it when I feel ready. I begin work again starting tomorrow but not sure for how long. . . may be a 5x a week thing for a few months or maybe just until the end of the week (I'm a babysitter and it depends on the boss's job). I've been off for a few months minus being needed for a day or two every so often and I've been going a little stir-crazy. Wow, would it be nice to come home to a clean house for a change. . . I know I have the power to make it happen, and I'm sure the boyfriend will be happy to see I'm finally getting off my duff and would be more than happy to help out. Funny I get in teh mood right before gong back to work, . Oh, I'll figure out something to post for my artwork. . . in the meantime my avatar is cropped off of something I drew. Maybe I'm feeling wayyy too self-conscious about my "identity" but I don't even associate my real name with my art. . . and I'm kinda afraid of associating my art with my identity here? I know I've got nothing to be ashamed of, but still. . .

messymimi- must have missed your post while typing out my last reply! I must say I've done similar things in my quest as a die-hard Disney fan. For a while I'd hit Wal-mart at midnight in order to pick up the latest Disney release the moment they opened the packing box on the sales floor! See how very impatient I can be?

Thanks everyone. I managed to load up 15 big bags of garbage which we put out on the curb late last night (after my boyfriend took me out to dinner at California Pizza Kitchen ). He ended up having to stay at work later than usual so we weren't able to pick up the shelves like I'd hoped, we should be able to tonight though (he says I deserve them, especially after all my hard work). He said he was a little shocked at the pile of garbage bags that greeted him when he opened the garage door, . The place feels a bit different, more open spaces, more floor, and more breathing room. I folded the blankets and towels I washed and put them in the linen closet instead of just laying them across the "laundry chair" (which I moved away from the dryer so I'd no longer be tempted to use it as such). I'm looking forward to being able to vacuum everywhere and eventually shampooing the carpet (which I wanted to do when we first moved in last year). He's even talking about perhaps replacing the carpet once we get all organized. What's really going to feel like an accomplishment is when I get to the kitchen, hopefully after all this it won't feel so intimidating. Bleh, I had to be one to hate getting my hands dirty! I've also got to put my allergies into consideration, I was sneezing like crazy after stirring some stuff up in the bedroom last night. Yikes, we really need a new mattress, but one thing at a time. A habit I'm really gonna have to force myself into is keeping sheets on the bed. I don't know what the deal is, but I guess we both toss & turn cuz when we wake up the sheets are all twisted and halfway off and it seems like such a pain to take care of every morning. I'd be doing more right now but I'm not at home, luckily I can take my laptop with me when I babysit and use their wireless. Sometimes I feel a little awkward being here, the guy I babysit for is not only my boyfriend's old boss, he's also the guy we rent our house from. His place is so perfectly and immaculately neat so I wonder what he'd think if he saw the condition of our house (he's the type that's always rearranging the cushions of his sofa to line them up just right). Anyway, time to take one of the kids to school, when I come back with the other one we're gonna watch Mary Poppins (she's never seen it)!

Hi Shy,
Congratulations on your great work. I love Disney movies too, and would love to see some of your artwork.
I have a suggestion about DVD and CD storage. I find that those things just attract dust like a magnet. I keep mine in a dresser drawer in the guest room. The drawers are just the right height, so that I can open a drawer and see the titles of each of the CDs and DVDs on the end of the cases. They don't get dusty and are closeby but not underfoot. A drawer in a dining room buffet or in a desk might work as well. Best of all, this solution was free!
I thought I'd suggest these because DVDs can look dusty and untidy very quickly. Good luck.
Cheers, skitter

Shy-I like your idea of moving your "laundry chair" away from the dryer. I need to do that with the basket that sits by mine that is always piled with (at least clean and folded) clothes for the boys.
Skitter-What an excellent idea on storing DVD/VHS!! How come I never thought of that?
Everyone here inspires me and Shy, I'm happy for you....you are doing a great job!

I haven't been able to clean as much as I'd like this past month because of issues with my tooth (I explain in the link found in my first post of this thread). Now that I'm feeling better I'm starting to clean again. I do like the idea of keeping my movies in a dresser, but we only have the one bedroom set right now which is reserved for clothes and other bedroom-y stuff. The real issue with them right now is space. I'm unsure of how many movies I actually have but between the two media shelves my boyfriend ended up buying me, they're supposed to hold 560 DVD's. Er, I can't even fit all my DVD's on them without stacking on the top as well. But they at least look like nice and neat since they're packed full. I have one shelf on either side of the spare room window, and placed a coffee table between them to hold a TV. I'd like to put chairs in there eventually so I can have a place to relax and watch my movies, in the meantime I've got a couple of floor cushions. I'm rather proud of the progress and can't wait to finish the room. Oh, and I'll keep my eyes out for the sheet holders!
