When I manage to get to the actual bottom of the laundry basket (and surrounding floor), there are always a few clothing items I just never want to deal with, so there they stay..... Things I dont like, or are old, or ill-fitting, or something or other. So today I was determined to deal with them. There were 6 items. I'm washing 1 of them and it will go into the goodwill box. The other 5 I put in a bag and they are now resting comfortably in the bottom of the garbage can. They will never be missed. (edit: title change.)

Not just the laundry basket! I have several areas of my apartment that have these little collections of things, I clean other things out of that area, but when I actually get to the problem items I don't want to deal with them, so I just leave them there "for now".
Great idea to deal with these "hangers-on"!

Great idea to deal with these "hangers-on"! Diane , yes, I have hanger-on-ers in other areas too. There were many around my dish drainer. Most of those are now gone when I got serious in the kitchen. Some might have been hanging out there for years. In fact, several areas where I've de-junked in the past most likely still have these hangers-on-ers left too. I expect the true test of being finally decluttered is having none of these problem items left. I wonder what that will feel like.

I have lots of these in the garage. "Mmm. Don't feel like dealing with THIS today, I'll leave it for next time." This goes on for months.

I have SO many "hanger-ons!" In laundry baskets, boxes, the floor, even on my dresser. Those are the worst. A project just doesn't feel completed until they are dealt with, but it takes forever to deal with them. MAJOR KUDOS to you for dealing with yours!!

I do the same thing. For me it's often things that either have to be hand washed or hung/laid to dry (winter sweaters tend to be the worst offenders.)
Yay for you!

I sooooo ditto you on this. Mine is paper. Those little stacks of greeting cards, receipts, correspondence about events that have long passed (but I may need the contact info listed on it), letters from banks and insurance companies about changes. Just in general little stacks of papers that I don't really know if I want to toss or keep - and if I DO keep them, what category do I put them in so I'll find em again. Actually, I've got a long list of hanger-on-ers. Good for you for dealing with yours Betsy! Not just the laundry basket! A project just doesn't feel completed until they are dealt with, but it takes forever to deal with them. MAJOR KUDOS to you for dealing with yours!! Thanks, but I've only dealt with them in 2 places - there are so many more. But at least I know now that they are a specific problem to be dealt with. Last night when I was doing the final clearing off of the dining table, I encountered many more. At the time I was not in a strong enough mental deciding mode, but still wanted to have that top cleared, so, gasp, I boxed them. It's not a large box, thankfully. I'm not sure it will work -and it might be a slippery slope- but I've decided that when I next encounter 'hangers-on' I'm not going to let them stall me. I'll wait till the end of a de-cluttering task in an area, if there are still some 'undecided' items, I'll box what's left and put them in one area. I have the place in mind. I expect what will happen is when I see them, I'll get disgusted (at them, not me ) and deal with them. Eventually I want to be able to deal with everything when I come across it, but I want to keep my eyes on the prize of clearing out the entire house and dont want little odd tid-bits to derail that effort. I want to be the one in control of my possessions, not them controlling me.
